Dave Chappelle's New House: Historic Yellow Springs Property

April 10, 2023

Dave Chappelle is a highly acclaimed American comedian, writer, and actor known for his irreverent, thought-provoking, and socially conscious brand of humor. Born in Washington, D.C. in 1973, Chappelle started his career in stand-up comedy in the 1990s and gained popularity through his performances on various comedy shows. He rose to greater prominence with his Comedy Central show, "Chappelle's Show," which ran for two seasons and featured skits that satirized race, politics, and pop culture. Chappelle's unique style, witty observations, and ability to tackle taboo topics with humor and insight have made him one of the most influential and controversial comedians of our time. “There’s something about doing stand-up that’s cathartic.” Check out Dave Chappelle's new house below.

Dave Chappelle has lived in Yellow Springs, OH since purchasing his $1 million home back in 2005. He made the move before the third season of Chappelle's Show. Seemingly wanting to escape the Hollywood life, and enjoy a more low key existence. Continuing to lay down roots in the small town, Chappelle purchased a new property in 2020 for a mere $390,000. The property is an old historic building, built in 1900. It’s zoned as a residential/commercial space, so what Chappelle plans to do with it is anyone's guess. It could be used as an apartment building. Or perhaps he is planning to turn it into an office space, allowing him to be able to spend even more time in Yellow Springs.

Chapelle grew up spending summers in Ohio with his father. “I love Ohio.” It makes sense that he opted to raise his family in the same place that filled his childhood with once in a lifetime memories. It honestly makes me love Dave even more. During the beginning of the Covid pandemic he started to put on social distancing comedy performances at his home, to keep the spirits of people up during a scary and unpredictable time. I’m sure the performances were also a way to keep his own spirits up during that time as well. “People don’t know what it's like standing up there onstage when you have a wall of people smiling at you.”

Classic Brick: The Exterior

This old, historic building is classic in structure. It’s made up of brick, with white pillars and trim. There is an attic visible on the front of the home, with a small window up top. Three other small windows are visible from the second floor front exterior. The building is surrounded by tall, full trees. As well as a white picket fence. To the side of the building there is a small, white storage shed. You are also able to see at least two chimneys from the back of the building.

As soon as you walk through the white front door, you are standing in the foyer. There is a staircase with a dark wooden railing. There are rooms to both the left and right, as well as a small bathroom. The walls are painted white, with an orange carpet runner, with black trim that cover hardwood floors. I can only imagine if the hardwood floors are original given how old the building is. Either way, they look to be in great shape.

What makes me think this building would make for a great apartment building is the fact that there are also a few rooms with either a kitchen or kitchenette. Some even have their own bathroom. This room in particular is quaint and cozy, with white walls and brown short carpet. There is a nice sized window with an air conditioning unit. The light from the window really opens up the space. As do the flowers located in the cubby above the door. This would be a decent space for a single person studio, or even a rented workspace. Perhaps an art studio?

Another space in this building looks like it is intended as an office. There is no bathroom or kitchen, and how it’s set up seems to make it clear. The ceiling is painted white to match the walls. One wall is also covered in light wood paneling. There is the same type of carpeting in this room as well, although you can also see a glimpse of the classic hardwood underneath. It makes me wonder if Dave intends to rip up the carpet and really embrace the natural flooring throughout this historic property. In the corner of the room there is a small, winding iron staircase, leading up to another office area.

What do you think Dave should turn his building into?

Bringing a Historic Building Back To Life

Whatever Dave Chappelle intends to do with this newly purchased space, I know it will be great. Just like everything he sets out to do. I love historic buildings, and the thought of restoring and bringing life into a building that is over a century old, is magical.
