Welcome to the South Florida Chapter of the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) web page. Chartered in 1973 as the Miami Chapter, the South Florida Chapter is one of the oldest chapters in a Society, with more than 60 chapters, our members have a wealth of engineering and design experience. Members include some of our nation’s premier plumbing design professionals.

ASPE South Florida has a long history and tradition of excellence, its members enjoy quality in all sections of the industry. Applications for the 2024 ASPE Alfred Steele Scholarship Are Being Accepted

Do you want some help getting your degree in engineering? ASPE is now taking applications for the 2024 Alfred Steele Scholarship, which is named in honor of Alfred Steele, PE, a long-time member of ASPE and a visionary and pioneer in advocating education and professional development for plumbing engineers and designers. Up to $5,000 in scholarship monies may be awarded to qualified applicants.

The Alfred Steele Scholarship is limited to ASPE members and their immediate family members who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, who are in or plan to attend a college, university, or technical school on a full-time basis (minimum 12 credit hours) and enrolled in an engineering program.

The application is now online, and completed applications must be received by January 31, 2024 to be considered. Scholarships will be awarded based on a blind panel selection process, and ASPE’s Board of Directors will make the final scholarship determination and awards based on the recommendations of the Education Committee. Recipients will be announced in June 2024.

 

IAPMO Seeks Members for Task Group for Hot Water Recirculation Systems

The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO®) is seeking volunteers to participate on the new Technical Committee for Hot Water Recirculation System Design, Installation, Commissioning, and Operations.This new manual will develop a holistic approach to the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of domestic hot water systems for the built environment, including but not limited to commercial and multifamily facilities. The goal of this standard will be to develop prescriptive and performance requirements for domestic hot water recirculation systems to minimize energy and water usage while improving safety.

The deadline to apply is December 31. Anyone interested in serving on the new committee may complete the application online at forms.iapmo.org/iapmo/committee/app_innovation_taskgroup.aspx.

Green Plumbing Design On-Demand Certificate Program

By now you should have heard that the popular Green Plumbing Design (GPD) certificate program is now available entirely on demand on ASPE Education. This new self-paced online program will enable you to earn your GPD certificate at your own speed, in your own time frame. You must be either Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD) or a Professional Engineer (PE) to be eligible to earn the GPD certificate. The cost is $500 for ASPE members and $600 for nonmembers. 

Copyright Infringement at Chapter Technical Meetings

The Society has been advised of a very serious matter concerning Chapter meeting presentations. In several instances, content from presentations has been copied without the speaker’s permission. This content includes photos and videos and was placed online on YouTube, Vimeo, and other sites. This practice violates copyright law, and we ask each chapter to take steps to ensure that it does not happen at your meetings to prevent any liability on the part of the Chapter or Society.

Learn From Home with ASPE Education

Are you looking for ways to earn CEUs and learn new skills while working from home? ASPE Education has you covered! At education.aspe.org you will be able to access our on-demand webinars, as well as our popular Read, Learn, & Earn program, and earn continuing education units after successful completion of the accompanying quiz. You can take part in any of our offerings 24/7 from your home office, kitchen, patio, garage, bathroom — or anywhere else you have an Internet connection.

Our 90+ one-hour on-demand webinars offer a convenient way to learn a new skill or brush up on some design techniques. Presented by expert instructors, the webinars cover a wide range of plumbing system design specialties, including fire protection, Legionella mitigation, domestic water systems, rainwater and stormwater harvesting, piping, valves, and fittings, roof drainage, natural gas systems, LEED, solar thermal technology, and more, as well as leadership and communications skills. Each webinar offers 0.1 CEU after completion of the post-webinar quiz, and many of the webinars are free for members of ASPE. 

Read, Learn, & Earn is a popular program that provides up to 1.2 CEUs per year. Each month a new RLE article is presented, accompanied by a 12-question quiz. If you score 90 percent or higher on the quiz, you are immediately awarded 0.1 CEU. Read, Learn, & Earn is free for ASPE members and $35 per quiz for nonmembers. Also, at ASPE Education, you can find recorded technical sessions from the 2019 ASPE Tech Symposium and the 2018 ASPE Convention & Expo. ASPE members also can access PDF downloads of all four volumes of the Plumbing Engineering Design Handbook. You can start learning and earning CEUs right now at education.aspe.org.
