Tom Hall was a talented Country Music singer-songwriter, yet he was inducted to Hall of Fame. He wrote the international pop crossover "Harper Valley PTA" was recorded by Jeannie C. Riley in 1968. The anthem about a single mom inspired a movie and Tv-series starring Barbara Eden. I do remember growing up I saw the movie, watch it on Tv along I love the music to Harper Valley PTA! He will be missed, yet never be gotten. We all know he is in a good place now. RIP ENTERAL

One of the greatest country song writers of all time. It was always an honor to perform one of his songs. He had a way of interpreting a story that just stood out. In the Same league as Kris Kristoferson.

I found out just today that a old friend has passed away. For some reason I can not stop the tears that flow from my heart. I raised my children to sing with me. Humor and a smile served all the verses of " Sneaky Snake ''.
As we got older I found out that his songs had new meanings to me. Meanings that became even more personal and private as I aged. I found that there was a song for every generation in my life and I felt that Tom T seemed to know what the everyday man was living. Our private passions, fears, mistakes, and achievements were all addressed by him. He shared his life with us and reflected a truth we all could live with. He was a man.

Tom-

Thanks for the summer of '72. Your having a first class license started a friendly competition that began when I obtained my FCC 3rd Class Operator's Permit and continued when we each became published authors. (You authored more books than I did, but you were at a slight advantage. Small wonder you asked me the definition of "work-for-hire.")

I'll always be indebted to you and Porter Waggoner for granting an interview when I was a WPLN Radio anchor/reporter. What a thrill it was to know I "made network" when the conversation aired on National Public Radio (NPR).

May you be smiling whenever you remember April 1, 1944.

Still grieving the loss of the man who wrote the story of my life over the decades. My wife and I were true "Hall Heads," as T called us. We followed his tour locations for many years and were so blessed to really get to him personally--being backstage and on the bus repeatedly, having lunch and appearing onstage with him a couple times. I hunted pheasants with Michel Vincent, the fiddle player with The Storytellers, for several years in South Dakota. He is irreplaceable.

Both.....I have great memories of this wonderful country boy, especially when we were so lucky to have him in the Roanoke area, way before he went big time. He was in Mcgraw's Recording location in Salem Va nearly everyday and was on the air at WBLU along with my husband Jolly Don McGraw. We Had so much fun while he was here in college . He was writing songs then, but not singing/recording. He practiced new songs he wrote, in the studio and I said to him one day. "Tom why don't you record your own songs"? He replied , I have smoked so long, I would never do good at recording. So he finished his course at college and left the area. It wasn't too long after that he became one of the best country music artists and was a hit to say the least. I love the memories he left with us and he will be greatly missed. One of my very favorite songwriters and artists. His style of "storytelling" has inspired me in my attempts to write songs. His style conveyed feelings along with experiences... some true... some fiction. The epitome of storytelling songwriting certainly has to be HARPER VALLEY P.T.A., but the light is bright in other compositions also. Irvin Lynn Beckman (a/k/a The Ole Word-Slinger).

I knew Tom Hall for nearly a half-century. Longer than little more than a handful of those who are still alive.

Tom was, initially, a mentor. Then, in a classic case of role reversal, I became a maternal figure, believing I could convince him to quit drinking (“It’s part of the culture.”) and smoking (“If I quit smoking I wouldn’t be sexy. You wouldn’t want me not to be sexy, would you?”)

Eventually he did both. On his own.

Tom’s excesses were coping mechanisms borne of early and later life trauma and loss. I don’t think he ever processed any of it. (“Oh, that happened a long time ago.”)

Then again, he would occasionally blurt out something so personal that even an intimate might suggest was too much information.

Tom wrote a memoir because writing a comprehensive autobiography, for all the joy in his life, would have been too painful. But when I indicated that those who knew him best were expecting more from that memoir, suggesting specific sins of omission, Tom snapped “Who are the gods of submission?”

He had a point. Tom may have been born without the introspective gene, but he took justifiable pride in his songs and novels, his truest means of self-expression. Thus his creativity is Tom’s gift to all- be they those whose relationships with Tom were transactional, the fewer who shared a transformative bond and those whom he never met- who mourn.
