The end of the current campaign is almost upon Villa fans. With only one Premier League game left, for some, it is going to be a long summer waiting for football to return at Villa Park.

Many of Villa’s first-teamers have been sensational throughout the campaign. This has now seen the club qualifying for Champions League football.

However, for some, they have spent the year away from the Birmingham outfit looking to secure a permanent move or to gain vital experience.

This article explores everything you need to know about the 12 Aston Villa players who have been out on loan, analysing how they did in their spell away from the club.

Leander Dendoncker

After spending the first half of the season in Villa’s first-team, Leander Dendoncker was then sent out on loan to Napoli with the option of a permanent move at the end of the season.

In Italy, the midfielder’s time has not fared well. Dendoncker is yet to start a game in Serie A and has only made three appearances off the bench, the last coming in February.

It was reported earlier this year that Dendoncker is likely to return to the club in the summer, with Napoli opting not to purchase the 29-year-old at the end of the deal.

Filip Marschall

Villa’s young, upcoming goalkeeper was once again sent out on loan this campaign, this time to League Two side MK Dons.

Here, the 21-year-old made seven appearances since joining on a short-term deal in January. Unfortunately, he did not manage to keep a clean sheet in any of the matches and often found himself on the bench.

His last game came in the playoff second leg against Crawley, where he lost 5-1 on the night.

Viljami Sinisalo

Another young, upcoming goalkeeper, Vijami Sinisalo was given another shot at League One football this season after a spell at Burton last year.

Here, the Finish ‘keeper shone, as he kept 13 clean sheets in 45 league games to help guide Exeter to an impressive 13th-place finish.

With Sinisalo still only being 22 years old, he may be given a chance in the Championship next season.

Lion Sousa

The young left-back only signed for Villa at the start of February before immediately being sent out on loan.

Here, Sousa joined Championship side Plymouth where the 19-year-old played a part in keeping the side in the second tier.

The Portuguese youngster made eight appearances for the Pilgrims and will now return to Villa.

One of the biggest signings in recent Villa history, things have simply not worked out for the Brazilian at Villa Park.

As a result, Philippe Coutinho was sent out on loan to Qatari side Al-Duhail SC in September. Here, the attacking midfielder has had mixed fortunes, scoring six times and collecting three assists in 22 matches.

As it stands, the Brazilian is set to return to Villa in the summer with questions remaining over his future.

Ben Chrisene

The promising left-back was sent out on loan to Blackburn Rovers in the January transfer window.

Here, the 20-year-old played a big part in keeping the former Premier League winners in the Championship.

Ben Chrisene played 16 times for Rovers, seven of which were starts. WhoScored gave him an average rating of 6.46 at the end of the campaign. However, in his natural left-back position, he had an average rating of 7.17.

Sebastian Revan

One player who experienced a particularly miserable loan spell, Sebastian Revan was sent out on loan to Championship side Rotherham in September, just days after making his Villa debut.

Here, the 20-year-old left-back was unable to keep the Millers in the Championship as they finished bottom with 27 points from 46 games.

In this spell, Revan played 36 matches, which included 28 starts.

Louie Barry

One of the most successful loan spells on this list, Louie Barry was once again sent out on loan, this time finding himself at League Two side Stockport County.

Here, the 20-year-old shone and the attacker scored nine in 20 games. As a result, Stockport ended up winning the division thanks to the youngster’s form.

It has now been reported that Stockport are looking to sign Barry ahead of their League One campaign.

Another signing that never worked out at Villa. Morgan Sanson joined the Birmingham outfit in 2021 but has only made 21 appearances for the club due to injuries and poor form.

As a result, Sanson was sent out on loan to Strasbourg last season and now finds himself at Nice.

At the French club, the midfielder has scored twice and got three assists in 28 games as Nice aim to finish in the Champions League spots.

Due to the conditions of his loan, Sanson now looks set to stay at Nice permanently.

Rico Richards

Rico Richards is another Villa youngster who spent a chunk of the season at Stockport County.

Joining in January, he helped the League Two side win the division. The 20-year-old played 11 times and scored once in this spell.

Kosta Nedeljković

Signing for Villa in the summer, Kosta Nedeljkovic was immediately sent back on loan to Serbian side Red Star Belgarde for the remainder of the season.

Back in his home country, the defender had a good start. However, a knee injury has kept him out for the entire second half of the campaign meaning he has only made 12 league appearances.

Kerr Smith

The final player on this list, Kerr Smith was sent up north to Scotland to spend the rest of the season at St. Johnstone in January.

Here, the 19-year-old centre-back has found limited game time, appearing just three times. Smith will be looking to avoid the relegation slots in his final two games at the club as the end of the season looms.
