In the Kingdom of Fiore of where magic is rampant, the Fairy Tail guild of the eponymous Fairy Tail anime was once a disbanded guild that protagonist Natsu Dragneel had worked hard to reconstruct from the guard up. Among his trusted confidants is Lucy Heartfilia, a charming yet kind spell caster who specializes in Celestial Spirit Magic, a variant of Spatial Magic that allows her to specifically summon Celestial Spirits through special Keys.

With a Fairy Tail toolkit that revolves around the Zodiac Signs, Lucy has access to around 12 Summons, each of which possessing different abilities, and on top of various summoning-related abilities that Celestial Spirit Magic provides. However, among Lucy’s summons, just which ones are the most powerful?

10 Aries

Aries of Fairy Tail

As with staple Fairy Tail fashion, the females of the cast tend to have a rather appealing choice of aesthetics, with Aries notable for her pink hair and rather conservative appearance. Taking on characteristics of her basis, the constellation Aries, the Celestial Spirit also has a penchant for wearing wool and even using Wool Magic. With Wool Magic, Aries can summon pink wool that can distract opponents in a wide variety of ways, making her the perfect support Celestial Spirit.

At its core, Aries can create enough pink wool to entangle opponents and distract them for the rest of her comrades. In terms of more specific techniques, Aries can lull opponents (Wool Bomb), force them to calm down (Wool Shot), defend herself from attacks (Wool Wall, Wool Cushion), blind them (100% Fluffy-Fluffy Wool), and completely immobilize opponents (Fluffy-Fluffy Wool Bomb).

9 Crux

Crux of Fairy Tail

Among the Silver Key Celestial Spirits, Crux has perhaps one of the strangest appearances of them all. Taking the form of a large cross based on the Southern Cross constellation, Crux is one of the latter Spirits that Lucy is able to summon from the Celestial Spirit World. And of these Spirits, it’s Crux that is perhaps the one that can open Lucy to various combat opportunities.

At its core, Crux specializes in Celestial Spirit Magic, much like Lucy. Instead of using it offensively, however, Crux can use his nature as a spirit to “scan” individuals that have had contact with both Celestial Spirit Magic and Celestial Spirits in general. Through sleeping, Crux can gather information about these individuals and report them when necessary. However, Crux does this to a limited degree, as he still values the privacy of denizens of the Spirit World.

8 Taurus

Taurus of Fairy Tail

Although having the rather peculiar appearance of being a humanoid with a cow’s head, Taurus is no slouch in combat. This axe-toting Celestial Spirit boasts brute strength and a mastery of his greataxe that he can not only swing it fast enough to trade blows but also catch projectiles with it.

As the embodiment of the Taurus constellation, he can integrate his magical prowess with his axe, creating devastating earthquakes and even sandstorms with the swings of his weapon. He also possesses immense strength, boasting the greatest strength amongst the Zodiac Spirits, and is always called when Lucy encounters an insurmountible physical obstacle.

7 Horologium

Horologium of Fairy Tall

Lucy’s summoning abilities aren’t just limited to the Golden Zodiac Keys, as Horologium is proof that even those belonging to the Silver Key Celestial Spirits can be rather reliable when the situation arose. And this is on top of Horologium’s rather odd appearance, which is primarily that of an anthropomorphized grandfather clock.

Despite this appearance, however, Horologium is one of the most defensibly-sensible Celestial Spirits in Lucy’s disposal. When deployed, Horologium can house individuals in his clock body within a particular time limit. However, this does mean almost absolute safety, as beneath Horologium’s wooden body is formidable defensible magic so potent that it could repel even powers based on natural sources such as lava and keep its occupants safe. Not only that, Horologium has the uncanny ability to automatically summon himself to protect his user in cases of extreme danger, making him a nifty last-minute defensive option.

6 Virgo

Virgo of Fairy Tail

While at first stubborn to a fault, Virgo has developed an immense loyalty towards Lucy throughout the rest of the series. Beneath her maid outfit is a do-or-die attitude, more than willing to go headfirst into battle, courtesy of her various magical abilities. As a Celestial Spirit, Virgo embodies the Virgo constellation, which is also highlighted in her sheer stability and affinity with the earth.

She possesses Earth Magic, particularly with drilling, as Virgo can use holes in the ground to travel and even trap enemies. Not only that, she can use Chain Magic to manipulate her chains and transform them into weapons, making her a potent long-ranged combatant aside from her proficiency in hand-to-hand. On top of these is her Transformation Magic, allowing her to transform into a burly woman with considerable strength compared to her original self.

5 Gemini

Gemini of Fairy Tail

Despite the unimposing appearance of the Gemini twins, they probably have some of the best power sets throughout the entire Fairy Tail series, at least from the point of view of Celestial Spirits. At its core, they possess the Copy ability, allowing them to take on the appearance of a person they have previously touched. This immediately makes them perfect for reconnaissance and espionage, although with set limits as they only know the things the original knows and can only transform for as long as five (5) minutes.

What’s perhaps scary is how Gemini can actually copy the Magic of the person they’ve copied, allowing them to tap into the same toolkit as the original, regardless of whether it is Ice Magic or other form of magic. The main caveat here is that they can only use the Magic of the same level as their user - but then again, considering the power of Lucy as a spellcaster, Gemini may very well be able to stop short of the most powerful individuals in the world as Copy targets.

4 Capricorn

Capricorn of Fairy Tail

The sunglasses-wearing goat-man called Capricorn is no mere anthropomorphized being, as this Celestial Spirit is one of the most potent hand-to-hand combatants among the 12 Golden Keys of the Fairy Tail guild member. Unfortunately for Lucy and the Fairy Tail guild, Capricorn’s Key was formerly possessed by Zoldeo of the Seven Kin of Purgatory, transforming Capricorn into Caprico, one of the most brutal fighters of the team.

While Lucy’s current possession of Capricorn’s Key meant the Celestial Spirit is back to normal, his former possessed self had magical powers unfathomable for a Celestial Spirit. Through Zoldeo’s access to the Lost Magic called Human Subordination Magic, Capricorn was forced to weaken the wills of others in order toe nslave them. Capricorn is also knowledgeable about Celestial Magic that he knew how to temporarily use the light-based magic Regulus, once considered exclusive to Loke.

3 Aquarius

Aquarius of Fairy Tail

Feisty Aquarius is quite unlike her inspiration, the constellation Aquarius. As the name implies, this mermaid-like Celestial Spirit has control over water through Water Magic, allowing her to manipulate water and release it with a powerful blast (Torrent), hitting opponents multiple times with bubbles (Bubble Shot), an upwards water blast (Water Pillar), and even becoming nigh-invincible by turning into water (Water Body).

Unfortunately for Lucy, she had to give up Aquarius in order to summon the Celestial Spirit King in one of the series’ most crucial battles. Regardless, Lucy herself considers Aquarius to be on par or if not just as powerful as Loke, who is not just a potent spellcaster but also a powerful Celestial Spirit.

2 Loke

Loke of Fairy Tail

Serving as the current leader of the 12 Golden Zodiac Keys, Fairy Tail guild spellcaster Loke was eventually revealed to be Leo, the Celestial Spirit who embodies the constellation Leo in the sky. As a regular human, Loke is a Ring Magic user, relying on the usage of his various rings to perform various magical feats that often take the form of melee attacks.

However, Loke’s melee prowess is enhanced further in his Celestial Spirit form. Thanks to his unique Caster Magic called the Regulus, Loke can tap into the power of pure light itself in order to augment his magic. Through Regulus, Loke can use Lion Brilliance to blind enemies in a huge area, whereas his Regulus Impact and Regulus Gatling Impact employs the use of light to heavily modify his melee abilities. As leader of the Golden Zodiac Keys, Loke demonstrates a level of leadership that gives him a tactical advantage in combat, especially when working with his fellow Zodiac Spirits.

1 Celestial Spirit King

Celestial Spirit King of Fairy Tail

Perhaps the strongest denizen and monarch of the Celestial Spirit World, the Celestial Spirit King is a being so powerful that Lucy cannot possess a Celestial Spirit Gate Key strong enough to contain its being. Rather, she had to perform Recompense Summoning, requiring the sacrifice of a Celestial Spirit that Lucy has a strong-enough bond with in order to borrow the King’s power.

Although imposing and intimidating, the Celestial Spirit King is both honorable and caring to his subjects. Such is his might that the King’s Meteor Blade slash can alter his surroundings, and his Galaxia Blade can dispel even the darkest of spells. As a Celestial Spirit King, he is practically immortal - but he also possesses the ability to control the flow of time and even bestow the powers of a Celestial Spirit onto a human for a limited time.
