3 million match results used to create Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tier list for Japan's competitive scene

Like every other fighting game out there, the various Super Smash Bros. scenes spread across the world approach competition in different ways, but it's rare to get a peek out how those regional differences are taking shape.

Pheasant of the Smash Mate Analysis website recently created a fascinating tier list for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate using the data of 2.9 million matches from Japan's competitive community.

The data was collected using Japan's unofficial ranking site Smash Mate and their stronger members to craft ratings based on the the win percentages of all 86 characters.

Among the expansive roster, Diddy Kong is actually the fighter who came out on top with a win rate of 53.07% — and Steve is right behind him.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, however, quite a few of the characters who are generally considered to be among Ultimate's top tiers are at the very bottom of the tier list including Joker, Sephiroth, Pikachu, and Roy.

So that seems to go to show that these characters, while strong, are not overpowered enough to carry players by themselves.

It's also pretty impressive to see that the spread of wins across the entire roster only ranges between 47 and 53%, which is pretty darn impressive with a cast that massive.

One important thing to note about this, however, is that the Smash Mate data only includes online matches through the site, so the tiers don't take into account performance at offline events and majors.

Compiling almost 3 million matches together is still nothing to shake a stick at though, and you can check out the full tier list below.
