Milestones in Qatar’s history

November 20, 2022 - December 18, 2022 - Qatar, once a poor and deserted territory but now a rich and modern state, is the first Middle Eastern country to host the FIFA World Cup.

Before the discovery of vast oil reserves in 1939, Qatar was one of world’s poorest countries, with an economy based mainly on fishing and pearling. Since then, its large petroleum and natural gas deposits have transformed it into one of the world’s wealthiest countries.

The tiny Gulf emirate is considered one of the more liberal Arab nations. It is home to the prestigious Arab news network Al Jazeera, and also to the U.S. Army’s central command for the Middle East.
