The Beginnings of the Group Originate in Phoenix, Arizona in the Late '60s, Where Guitarist Bill Spooner, Keyboardist Vince Welnick and Bassist Rick Anderson Formed as the Beans (Alternately Billing Themselves as the Radar Men from Uranus). The cover (which lacks the flair of the Prince/Cotten handiwork) says it all. This is likely an unauthorized release of a concert recorded circa 1976. Interesting from a historical perspective, the recording is undermined by fairly muddy sound quality.
On the other hand, I do not know of any other source for a live rendition of "Pimp," one of the true gems of the Tubes catalogue. If you can get past the low-fidelity, you will enjoy the precision musicianship of the opening Grandiose Overture (a variation on the "Overture" from "What Do You want From Live") and the silliness of the group's classic live shows. This should get most die-hard fans primed for the release of the upcoming Tubes Documentary due out this spring.

The Tubes were so far ahead of their time it wasn't funny. But they were. Originally a bootleg LP entitled "Darted in My Own Armchair" of a gig at the Shrine Auditorium in L.A. this is The Tubes on their "Young and Rich" tour circa 1976. The Tubes had one of the greatest stage acts in rock and roll history and their music was equally brilliant. This recording is fine and the highlights are the long overture they would open with back in the day, snatches of different songs leading up to the appearance of lead singer/actor/human prop John Waldo "Fee" Waybill. He appears as the band riffs into their hilarious ode to commercialism, "What Do You Want From Life" which leads into "Tubes World Tour," which builds to a synthesizer fueled peak before a phenomenal crescendo. The other highlights are a segue of "Mondo Bondage/Don't Touch Me There" which, onstage, went from S&M to '50s leather motorbike second base action back to twisted romance. The other highlight is a live version of "Pimp" led by the band's spiritual leader, Bill "Sputnik" Spooner. Oddly, "W.P.O.D." is not included.
This is a snapshot of, for my money, the greatest live stage rock act ever. If you're a fan it's a must. If you're not you had to be there. And while there are rock docs about every singles hitter in the rock pantheon, there is still not documentary about a band whose history cries out for a visual revisit.
The Tubes...as outrageous as any rock act in history but ignored in the history books and forgotten by media. If you were there you know what I mean.
