Roughly equal parts testosterone-fueled, dropped-D metal guitar and punk rock structuring/vocals. Basically, this band didn't make it for two reasons:

1. Either they were unwilling to further refine their sound, or Mascis and his crew didn't want to clean it up either. As it stands, Tad's music was simply too "in your face" for the average teenager, and not complex enough for elitist metalheads who would scoff at the lack of facemelting guitar solos.

2. No junkie (Cobain/Staley) and/or hunky (Vedder/Cornell) frontman. Sorry to say, Tad Doyle is not exactly a figure your average, dumb kid could pretend to "sympathize with" or idolize.

At the end of the day though, Tad may just be the best embodiment of what the Seattle sound was about before LA record producers and MTV camera crews rolled into town. They offered eardrum-piercing volume, pounding riffs, and a singer who didn't care what rock stereotypes said about frontmen and just got up on stage and killed it. Then on this record, they were able to add a very underrated drummer, whose skills really add some depth to the music at times.

They didn't have the polished sound of Nirvana, the arena-filling melodies of Pearl Jam, the progressive pretensions of Soundgarden, or the junkie angst and flashy guitar work of Alice in Chains (and that's not a knock against any of those bands, who are/were all great musicians in their own right). Tad just went out every night, drank some beer, and kicked some ass. Really, that's what rock n' roll should primarily be about.

Key Tracks: Grease Box, Throat Locust, Luminol, Just Bought the Farm, Paregoric

Tad is a grunge and alternative metal band formed in 1988 on Seattle, USA by Tad Doyle.

This album carries a really nice angry energy with it that shows off on track like "Grease Box" or "Throat Locust" and while they can not be angry like shown on "Gouge", i think that the angry songs are the stronger side on here.

After a bit of scrolling on the grunge tag of music on this site i came across this album, and I must say I was not disappointed. Its both angry and sensitive at the same time. With more edgyer songs at the beginning slowly thrusting into more softer songs, it was nice. I like when an album/band can incorporate a mix of sensitive and heavy because I feel it gives it variety in sound. side note- a big reason I stopped listening to so much punk was because with certain bands (obviosly not all) it was just the same fast tempo and screaming vocals- which yes i know punk is like that but there is a way to make it more complex. side note over- Back to Inhaler- this was my first album ive listened to by TAD, im excited to try other albums from them. Now, im not going to sit here and say this was by far the BEST grunge album ive ever heard because its not, and that's okay. Because I believe it still did a GREAT job and I loved pretty much every song of this album. with my top favorites being the slower ones such as Leafy incline and Gouge.
I really love how Leafy incline starts with this scary guitar in the beginning, and at the time of me listening the lyrics of this being " ive gotta know im not alone, just one soul" is really fitting to how alone i felt.
Luminol- I love the chourus and the way he sings remember your lies" Ive got to say this singer has a great voice- very....growly? is that a way to explain? whatever anyone who listens to grunge should know what i mean. But anyway this track is so cool because around the two minute mark there is a change in tempo and its just so cool but swiflty makes its way back, finially finishing off with a pretty cool guitar lead and faster drum/beat.
((i kinda went out of order with the song listings so sorry about that I dont feel like fixing it though)
Ulcer- also another pretty catchy/good song, love the guitar riff
Grease Box- is a very good opening song I was instantly captivated by it.
Lycanthrope- I think this was one of the tracks i didn't care to much about.
just bought the farm- I liked this one as well the bass line is cool and I just personally like/think the lyrics are pretty catchy. Again this dudes voice is so good. I like how hes trying to hard.
Roter-Meh
Paregoric- TAD has some good riff work whoever is on the guitar is pretty good. I like how all the sings sound uniquely different- at least with that aspect, I guess you could say the signing is almost the same as the last two- but he does have range
pansy-This ones lyrics are kinda...scary/ disturbing. From what I gather its about a abductor stealing children and bribing them with candy. Sick beat though! LOL
Gouge- is my favorite and such a good ending track, I love how this album starts off angsty and ends with this track- they aren't always to constant with the lineup though, it was kinda weird to go from pansy to gouge.
I really like this song because of the slightly optimistic lyrics as well as a melancholic feeling, " warm memories clutched to tight"- relatable "time slips away"
Its just a very very good song and it was a perfect choice to put it at the end in my opinion.

Well id give this album a 3.5/5 stars, because they lineup of things was sometimes a bit wonky- with there being a softer slower song going right into a fast scary song, and a couple of the songs not being to memorable.
Good album overall totally would recommend

Huge Letdown
One of the heavier bands in the grunge movement also happens to be one of the most boring. I didn’t find anything redeemable about this album, it just blended in with the background. Also sounds more like groove/alt metal than anything.

One of the most badass entries in the grunge genre, annd also one of the gems of overall alt-metal, up to par with Helmet's Meantime in that regard.
Tad and friends weren't scared of signing for a mayor record label and giving them this piece of sludgy sound that would never be mainstream, but this were the 90's, and bands could afford for a brief moment to do so, sadly, it did not pay respect for the band and this record specially, as few people remember it, mostly guys in their 40's from the Washington State.
Probably a top 10 grunge album ever. And one of the best alt-metal ones from the 90's. Totally recomended.

Like Melvins and Butthole Surfers, 1993, too, saw everyone's favorite scruffy Pacific Northwest grunge rockers - TAD - drop a major label record during the height of the alternative era. Frontman Tad Doyle either looked like a lumberjack-from-hell or a slimy mechanic that'd squeeze every last cent outta your pocket. By all accounts he was a very nice guy, though.

Eschewing their shambling, primitive noise rock days for a slightly more accessible alt. metal sound, TAD don't, however, sacrifice all their ugliness - you won't be mistaking any of this for, like, Candlebox. Sure, it's more tuneful, but it also just so happens to contain some of the best songs of their career.

If you dug "3-D Witch Hunt" off 8-Way Santa, this album won't disappoint. It has that similar pop-oriented, melancholic sound. For some reason, listening to Inhaler gives me that feeling as a kid of the last week of summer before school started up again. Everyone shoulda been talking about TAD back in them days. Superficial motherfuckers.

Verdict: completely awesome.

Probably the heaviest a record I've ever heard. The sound is more metal than grunge, with a surprising amount of melody.

Amazing production on this thing, about as loud as an album can get without hurting your ears. The bass tone in particular is incredible.

Tads lyrics really separate them from other grunge/metal bands. More storytelling and observation than introspection. Masterful imagery on leafy incline.

Loses a star for being pretty repetitive and losing speed around the middle of the record, but it picks up near the end. Gouge is a great melodic song to end the record with

Top tracks: Grease Box, Throat Locust, Leafy Incline, Luminol, Just Bought The Farm, Pansy, Gouge.

I have finally listened to Tad. Always been there on the back burner. This is quality album. Punk-Grunge-Sludge. Catchy sometimes or obnoxious others. Not insanely heavy though but heavy enough.
