The reason is that Sayles understands the appeal of these kinds of dramas while always grounding the screenplay in realistic uncertainty. McDonnell and Woodard are truly fantastic in this. I really enjoyed the support cast as well, especially the scene with Angela Bassett. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The beginning of this movie is horrible... Constant stream of F-words that nearly made me turn it off. Fortunately the swear words died down (sort of) as the movie progressed, but they were still there. I didn't like May-Alice at all, but Mary McDonnell was very good in the role and played it convincingly. However, the best thing about this movie was Alfre Woodard. She was wonderful and made Chantelle very likeable. I also enjoyed David Strathairn (whom I loved in "A League of Their Own") as the friend of May-Alice. I wish that the movie would have explored the relationships more (between Chantelle and "Sugar" and May-Alice and Rennie, but mostly the relationship between Chantelle and May-Alice. The ending came a little too fast for me and although the movie seemed long anyway, I was hoping for more. To be honest, this movie had been on my TBW (To be watched) list for YEARS-I had no idea it was made in 1992, because it really doesn't seem like it's aged that much, so I'm really glad that I finally got to see it. I didn't go into it with any real expectations so aside from the overuse of the F word, it was okay. The music was great but there wasn't a lot of background music.
