Edward Guthmann San Francisco Chronicle Set In Louisiana bayou country, John Sayles' new character drama -- his best by far -- stars Mary McDonnell as a soap-opera actress who returns to her childhood home after a paralyzing accident. Rated: 4/4 Jan 11, 2023 Full Review Alyx Vesey Bitch Media I hope that films that share Passion Fish's politics continue to be made and improved upon. I just hope more directors of color, and female directors of color in particular, get to make them. Jan 9, 2021 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Entertainment Weekly Rated: B Sep 7, 2011 Full Review Malcolm Johnson Hartford Courant Passion Fish drifts slowly by, like the turgid waters of Louisiana's bayous. Yet with his novelist's eye and story sense, and two brilliantly paired actresses, John Sayles pulls us ever deeper into the lives of a bitter paraplegic actress and her nurse. May 29, 2018 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com A tightly-focused narrative about interior struggles and unexpected changes, the film is a cynical anti-Reagan story about monetary success and class distinctions, a political fable about female survivors. John H Two great performances. Unique story too Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/06/24 Full Review AB L Given the premise, the movie is remarkably unsentimental while still managing to be deeply moving. The reason is that Sayles understands the appeal of these kinds of dramas while always grounding the screenplay in realistic uncertainty. McDonnell and Woodard are truly fantastic in this. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/31/23 Full Review tom w What a fantastic movie. The interplay between Alfre Woodard & Mary McDonnell was exciting to watch. For me the characters were pitch perfect. I really enjoyed the support cast as well, especially the scene with Angela Bassett. Vondie & David Strathairn played great roles & could have been developed further, but the movie was already over two hours long. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review dustin d Passion Fish avoids the melodramatic pitfalls it seemed almost set up to fall into, and shows real life is more interesting than the "stories" on daytime TV. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The beginning of this movie is horrible... Constant stream of F-words that nearly made me turn it off. Fortunately the swear words died down (sort of) as the movie progressed, but they were still there. I didn't like May-Alice at all, but Mary McDonnell was very good in the role and played it convincingly. However, the best thing about this movie was Alfre Woodard. She was wonderful and made Chantelle very likeable. I also enjoyed David Strathairn (whom I loved in "A League of Their Own") as the friend of May-Alice. I wish that the movie would have explored the relationships more (between Chantelle and "Sugar" and May-Alice and Rennie, but mostly the relationship between Chantelle and May-Alice. The ending came a little too fast for me and although the movie seemed long anyway, I was hoping for more. To be honest, this movie had been on my TBW (To be watched) list for YEARS-I had no idea it was made in 1992, because it really doesn't seem like it's aged that much, so I'm really glad that I finally got to see it. I didn't go into it with any real expectations so aside from the overuse of the F word, it was okay. The music was great but there wasn't a lot of background music. In such a dramatic film, this was surprising. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review steve d Great acting and a fantastic story.
