Really gripping and engrossing book

Really gripping and engrossing book
I read this book becuse it was the novel my book club (diversity book club) decideded to read. It is the first suspense novel i have read and i really liked it.We follow a woman called Christine who is in her mid forties and has amnesia. The book starts with Chris wondering where she is, who's bed she's in, thinking she's had a one night stand but when she goes to the bathroom she gets the shock of realising she's 40 not 20. It was really interesting to watch her as Ben, her husband, tried to explain what happened and tries to explain her illness, what she normally does everyday and give her a brief run down of events before he leaves for work. We learn that Chris wakes up every morning and has forgotten what she has done the previous day, resulting in her only remembering things from before her 'accident' that led to her memory loss. It was really insightful into what it must be like, how dreadful and terrifying it must be to wake up each morning and be told that there's 20 years of your life gone by that you can't remember. The layout of the book was really interesting it started as a general narrative of Christine dealing with what was going on since she's woken up. However once Ben leaves for work Chris gets a call from a doctor who she has apparently been secretly meeting, after she meets with the doctor he gives her her diary which she has been writing in to try keep track of what she's been doing and to try remember things. Once Chris starts reading the diary the format of the book changes into the diary and we are reading what Chris has wrote. I loved the diary it was so intense, she starts to realise that there are things Ben is not telling her about her past and other strange things that start to come up. Watching her figure stuff out and remember certain memories from her past which were not adding up with what Ben was telling her was so entertainingI had so many questions reading the book, wondering who to believe and what was true it really made you think. I enjoyed how Chris gradually remembered different memories from her past, how she stayed on track with what happened over the previous days and what she discovered with the help of her diary. Once I was around half way through the book I could not put it down, things no longer added up there was so much unknown and second guessing and I need to see what she was going to do next. The ending was amazing, I thought I knew where the book was going and I was kind of disappointed that I had guessed it but no I didn't guess it at all. I was so shocked, I really didn't have a clue that, that was going to happen. It was so fast paced and action packed at the end, I was gripping on to the book trying to read as fast is I could. I also liked how the story ended I was happy for Chris and was glad that something good finally happened to her.Overall I really enjoyed this book it was intense, thrilling, thought provoking and so much more. I like Chris as a character and was invested in her story. I am glad I read this book it was deffinetly a good suspense novel to introduce you to the genre.

As the author of the  The Whispers of The Sprite (YA Paranormal Romance) (The Whispers Series) I loved Before I go to sleep'
Every page turned was a relief! a relief as in the next was as meticulous in painting vivid details of the accounts that unfold with every page bringing you closer to the source and the intentions of the writer.

`Before I go to sleep' is a story about a woman in her mid-forties. every waking day is spent recollecting thoughts that never seem to add up to that which are to most in a chronological order to most (start middle and obviously end). Some days the memories coming from her childhood but other days she wakes ups not knowing anything at all only having random flash backs of her past. Christine is asked by Doctor Nash to keep a journal and write down everything that she has done, a day to day account of her lucid memories.

She writes of her husband Ben, a doctor that helps her remember also friends from college. The plot thickens as you drown into Christine's daily diary entries where she slowly discovers that her whole life isn't what it seems to be. Every day Christine has to face the challenge of reconstructing her past with present, inquiring about what caused her memory loss. She has to deal with a growing number of daunting questions. Even though she doesn't remember, her diary helps her to undergo like a microscope a small investigation about her real life and her husband who attempts to cover all the unbearable memories from Christine's past.

I must admit the novel is a real page turner and not being able to put it down until the last page was relieved of its duty. The author, a qualified doctor who specialized in the analysis and treatment of hearing-impaired children, S J Watson was inspired to write the novel by Henry Gustav Molaison who after surgery was unable to form new memories.

My initial reaction that it would be a light read love story, on the contrary! instead it turned out to be an engaging psychological thriller. I was holding my breath almost to the end when Christine found out the truth about herself and people around her. S J Watson gave us a beautifully written piece with exceptional settings and a simple idea which is transformed into a heart hammering thriller.

I can highly recommend this book, the plot line is fast but engaging and I can assure you that after finishing this book the story will remain in your memories forever

I first heard this novel dramatised on Radio 4 and was instantly intrigued. The premise is such a good one and so extraordinary that frankly, no matter what you did with the plot, it was going to be good anyway! I hoped that by reading the book, there would be more depth to the story, as it felt a little incomplete on the radio. Fortunately, I was well-rewarded as there is a great deal more to it.

Before I continue, I had NO IDEA that this was such a huge bestseller with a mega-hype campaign, that it was a debut novel....obviously I've been on another planet for several years! It is the most refreshing way to read a book, though, not knowing anything about it!

The plotline is already well-known: every time Christine Lucas goes to sleep, she loses all her memories of that day. When she wakes, she has no memory at all, except those of herself 20 to 25 years ago. All she has is a journal that she writes in frantically every day, telling herself about herself. I worked out - given the length of some entries - that she had to be spending her entire days just reading and writing! She also has a husband who patiently tells her every day who she is, who he is, but he doesn't tell her much.

The more she finds out, the more her memory unfolds, yet the memories don't add up and this is what makes it such an exciting read. You KNOW who the "bad guy" must be but you can't figure out how or why or what's going on. It's impossible to fit the facts together - and this is what makes it so thrilling! You just HAVE to find out what it's all about!

It's an incredibly claustrophobic novel, told entirely from Christine's extremely limited point of view. The world seems tiny - she barely moves outside of the box in which she keeps hidden her journal. And yet the images of her discovery hang around you for days.

I would have given this five stars without a second thought - it really is an excellent read with clever plot twists, a heroine that is instantly sympathetic and tensions that strain to breaking point. But it has just one error: in one scene, a lover is naked but the next moment, they are tearing their clothes off to get to each other. For someone who was taking such care with the plot, the author should really have picked up on this, not least the editors! In precision writing, you need to keep your blades sharp.

There are few books which keep me up until 6:00am but this is one of them.

Imagine waking up each day with no memory of the previous twenty years. That's what happens to Christine whose memory of the previous day is wiped clean by amnesia each time she falls asleep at night. She wakes next to Ben, her husband, but she has no idea of who he is and is alarmed to find herself in an older woman's body than she remembers. Each day Ben has to tell her who she is and why she can't remember things.

Each day when Ben goes to work she is left on her own to explore the world anew. It's quite a task when you consider the advances in technology over the last twenty years. She begins to accept her situation ...and then her mobile phone rings.

Before I go to sleep is written in three parts 'Today', 'The Journal of Christine Lucas' and 'Today' (again). It tells the story of Christine's slow discovery of her life. As you read part two, the journal, she finds discrepancies in what she has been told. She finds evidence that Ben truly loves her and discovers to her sorrow that her mother and son are dead. She also finds that the accident Ben tells her she had, didn't happen and that she has been unfaithful to him. Does Ben lie to her because he can't bear to see her grief each day anew? Is he protecting her?

The story reaches a climatic end in part three leaving Christine safe in the arms of 'Ben' with an understanding of what happened to her and in hope of her memories slowly returning.

Technically a very well written book containing just one of the proofreading errors so common in today's e-books. If you find it as fascinating as I did you may also like the film
50 First Dates [DVD] [2004 ] which deals with a similar amnesia condition but does not have the climatic ending.
