Summary

  • CBS renews The Neighborhood for season 7 and announces a spinoff, Crutch starring Tracy Morgan.
  • The Neighborhood season 7 cast will feature familiar faces, with potential new additions due to pregnancy storyline.
  • Season 7 storyline speculation focuses on balancing work and home life while tackling cultural differences with humor.

The hit CBS sitcom The Neighborhood has delivered laughs non-stop for six seasons already, and Cedric the Entertainer and his co-stars will return for season 7. Debuting as part of 2018's fall season, The Neighborhood follows Michigander Dave Johnson and his family as they relocate to a predominantly Black neighborhood in California where he learns to fit in thanks to his neighbor Calvin. Anchored largely by the charisma of Cedric the Entertainer, the series uses light humor to touch on sensitive racial topics that most sitcoms stray away from.

Like most multi-camera sitcoms, the reviews for The Neighborhood have been mixed at best, but that hasn't stopped it from being a consistent ratings machine for CBS. Drawing a lot from some of the best sitcoms of all time, The Neighborhood succeeds largely because it delivers a comforting spin on topics that aren't quite so comfortable. The sixth season was delayed, along with the rest of Hollywood, by the strikes of 2023, but it hasn't seemed to affect the show's momentum.

Coming around a month before the show's sixth season concluded, the latest news confirms that The Neighborhood has been renewed for a seventh season (via TV Line). This news was also accompanied by the announcement of a spinoff, Crutch, which will star Tracy Morgan as Calvin's cousin from Harlem. It's unclear if Morgan's character will appear in The Neighborhood season 7, but crossovers seem likely. The show's renewal wasn't much of a surprise considering it's overwhelmingly positive viewership numbers.

The Neighborhood Season 7 Cast

Calvin & Company Will Return

Long-running sitcoms rarely change their casts all that much between seasons, since it is the continuity within the relationships that typically builds the most humor. The Neighborhood is no different, and there hasn't been much variety in the ensemble since it debuted in 2018. With that in mind, the cast of The Neighborhood season 7 will look familiar to long-time fans, with the likes of Cedric the Entertainer and Max Greenfield returning as Calvin and Dave, respectively. The only expected change might come in the form of new additions, especially with Courtney and Marty's pregnancy in season 6.

The Neighborhood Season 7 Story

What Will Happen To The Neighbors In Season 7?

Dave smiles while Calvin talks animatedly in The Neighborhood

Because it's a sitcom, it's difficult to speculate about the story of The Neighborhood season 7. The show has established ongoing threads in the past, and it's hard to say if any of the new ideas introduced in season 6 will continue into season 7 and beyond. Marty and Courtney's shocking pregnancy reveal in the season 6 premiere is likely to permanently change the family dynamic within the Butler household as well as introduce a new character that fans can watch grow up if the series continues.

Until more details are available, it can be expected that The Neighborhood season 7 will continue many of the humorous tropes that the series has relied on so far. Dave and Calvin will both struggle to balance their home lives with their work, while also struggling to understand each other and their respective cultures. The best aspect of The Neighborhood is that it has graduated past its initial concept into something much more heartfelt.
