"Go back to your paradise and please do not come back"
There's been a problem in French cinema dating back several decades, Truffaut wrote about it for Cahiers du cinéma and those essays later spurred French new wave, and that problem is on full display in this film. The French film industry has such reverence for classics of French literature that it is popular to adapt classic novels, and when it is done these adaptations turn into massive, overblown, Hollywood-imitating melodramas. And, amongst many other problems, that is broadly what is wrong with The Man Who Laughs (2012), it is so large scale yet lacks any distinct artistic vision. It's like a grand cruise ship with no rudder, it is…
If you've ever watched the original version with the wonderful Conrad Veldt, i really fail to see how you can say this one is good.
It's a horrible pastiche of the book, most things don't even make sense (Gwymplain lives his whole life separated from the world and then has the guts to tell the politicians how the country should be run? really?) and the love story is even watered down.
Depardieu probably had some debts to pay in order to star in this.
Avoid at all costs.
This is my all-time favorite story apart from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, that i watch whatever is the adaptation. It doesn't deserve all those negative reviews, it's very good and compared to the 1928 film this adaptation respects the tragic ending in the novel, the only thing that may not be very convincing about it is the characterization of Gwynplaine but it doesn't really bother, at least for me. On the contrary of many people i don't think this film is soulless, i enjoyed every emotional moment and the ending scene where Ursus cries for the first time, i loved it.

I have absolutely no idea who this movie could possibly be for, other than lit students too lazy for Coles Notes. It's not bad, it's just... there. The only true failure is that they forewent perhaps the most influential makeup job in history for a mediocre knock-off of Heath Ledger's Joker ( which was itself an attempt to get away from a character based upon...said most influential makeup job). But seriously, who is this for?

On one hand it has really nice elaborate set pieces that feel like something Tim Burton would have. I understand that this story pulls a bit from the Joker’s introduction in the comics, and yet this spins a tale from Victor Hugo. I don’t think I’ve read the book, so I don’t know if it stays true to the storyline. Again, stylistically it’s fun but the story could have been a bit better.
Also, Swann was and is the only reason why I stayed.
