Anthropologist David Graeber undertakes the first detailed ethnographic study of the global justice movement. The case study at the center of Direct Action is the organizing and events that led to the one of the most dramatic and militant mass protests in recent yearsagainst the Summit of the Americas in Québec City. Written in a clear, accessible style (with a minimum of academic jargon), this study brings readers behind the scenes of a movement that has changed the terms of debate about world power relations. From informal conversations in coffee shops to large spokescouncil” planning meetings and tear gas-drenched street actions, Graeber paints a vivid and fascinating picture.
Along the way, he addresses matters of deep interest to anthropologists: meeting structure and process, language, symbolism and representation, the specific rituals of activist culture, and much more. Starting from the assumption that, when dealing with possibilities of global transformation and emerging political forms, a disinterested, objective” perspective is impossible, Graeber writes as both scholar and activist. At the same time, his experiment in the application of ethnographic methods to important ongoing political events is a serious and unique contribution to the field of anthropology, as well as an inquiry into anthropology’s political implications.
David Graeber is an anthropologist and activist who teaches at the University of London. Active in numerous direct-action political organizations, he has written for Harper’s Magazine and is the author of Fragments of an Anarchist Anthropology, Towards an Anthropological Theory of Value, and Possibilities.

Sobre el autor
David Rolfe Graeber (/ˈɡreɪbər/; born 12 February 1961) is a London-based anthropologist and anarchist activist, perhaps best known for his 2011 volume Debt: The First 5000 Years. He is Professor of Anthropology at the London School of Economics.
As an assistant professor and associate professor of anthropology at Yale from 1998–2007 he specialised in theories of value and social theory. The university's decision not to rehire him when he would otherwise have become eligible for tenure sparked an academic controversy, and a petition with more than 4,500 signatures. He went on to become, from 2007–13, Reader in Social Anthropology at Goldsmiths, University of London.
His activism includes protests against the 3rd Summit of the Americas in Quebec City in 2001, and the 2002 World Economic Forum in New York City. Graeber was a leading figure in the Occupy Wall Street movement, and is sometimes credited with having coined the slogan, "We are the 99 percent".

The book chronicles the buildup and execution of a large scale direct action protest. Graeber's detailed ethnographic writing draw you into this moment in time and the book serves to tell the tale in a way that offers plenty of object lessons in how to lay seige to the institutions of industrial capitalism. Graeber's commitment to activism and his willingness to place his body on the line are inspirational.

Direct action, as I understand, is essentially when people stubbornly act as if they are more free than they really are, but with mind to achieving greater freedom.
The first part details the events leading up to and including attempts to disrupt the world trade summit in Quebec City in 2001. Graeber is basically 'indigenous' as an participant-observer: he identifies with anarchism. The second part is a well-paced breakdown of the various elements of anarchist culture in North America. The chapter on meetings should be essential reading for any anarchist affinity group. The last part, the final chapter, is a look at how 'structural violence' hinders the revolutionary imagination. Hope and idealism abounds.
Two very superficial criticisms: 1. the title should have been different to reflect a lack of actual content about what goes on during direct action events; 2. I personally think violent struggle or property destruction to be a stupid way to struggle if you are an anarchist. How is smashing windows and walls going to draw the support of the multitude? The Politics of Nonviolent Action might be a good counter-book to this, although it is a work of political science.
But overall, would definitely recommend for radical progressive activists and more socially conscious ethnographers alike. Four stars.
