Imagine watching paint dry for about an hour. Then, after it dries, continue to watch it for 5 more hours. That sums up the six episodes of Season 3.

It's a good show, but season 3 was frustrating. We were constantly yelling at the TV that they were being too stupid, too lax, and taking too long. It seemed unrealistic at times as if intentionally setting up more problems.
We enjoyed it to the end, but not without some frustration or fear that stupid things would happen.

A cat and mouse chase, yes; though not a simple one. This story by Allan Cubitt is great case study of elaborate character sketches and a sprawled out, elaborate script. Based in the city of Belfast, "The Fall" follows a serial killer, and a cop in his pursuit as he intelligently continues and ends lives without leaving any clues or evidence.
Spread across 17 episodes (3 seasons) between 2013 and 2016, this isn't a new one and even when you watch it now, is a slow burner. Fair warning; the theme revolves around violence towards women and might be disturbing for individuals who have experienced this in real life or are sensitive towards watching such content.
It isn't about gore and blood; it's more about the violation.
The killer, Paul Spector is a complex individual, a pure sociopath, who "doubles" as a doting father and husband on the flip side. The hunter, Stella Gibson is one with shades of grey – not a saint, but a sensitive cop with her own baggage and is fascinated by this nemesis.
What's most intriguing about the story is the depth of characters and the arcs they traverse through the three seasons. The chemistry between Jamie Dornan and Gillian Anderson crackles the screen up; not in the usual way one would think of, but more like Pacino and De Niro in the classic "Heat" (1995)
Gillian Anderson shows her brilliance again in this role; sharp, strong, vulnerable, troubled – so many facets to the character who could have been simple and plain virtuous. Most of the acting in this role is Jamie Dornan's work before the "Fifty Shades" trilogy brought him into the global spotlight, but he slips perfectly into the skin of Spector – the poker face, the intensity, the apathy and the warmth of a father, all in same stride.
The ensemble includes John Lynch, Aisling Franciosi, Stuart Graham, Archie Panjabi, Niamh McGrady, Bronagh Waugh, Valene Kane and Colin Morgan – a mix of well etched out characters and lastly but not the least, the city of Belfast is as much a partaking actor in the story.
There are many opinions about the three seasons and how it may have lost "steam", but I honestly feel that the third season was as important and intense as the rest of the story.
"The Fall" is a much underrated piece; possibly owing to its sensitive subject matter but it surely deserved more recognition; especially for the exquisite writing of Cubitt and the complexly dimensional portrayals by Anderson and Dornan.

I absolutely loved this series. I thought Jamie Dornan was brilliant as was Gillian. The scene in season 3 episode 6 was phenomenal when he just snapped and went ballistic was pretty phenomenal. She (Gibson) really got under his skin. I'm such a fan of British crime shows and this one topped the charts for me. Wish more British shows were streamed on American TV but it's why I subscribe to BBC and BritBox

While the third season doesn't pack the same punch as the previous two, the cat-and-mouse game between stars Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan is still worth tuning in for, even if the game has gone on a bit longer than it needed to. The series, as a whole, is still commendable for pacing and acting alone as it manages to stand out, even against the myriad "true crime" dramas.

Unpopular opinion: I enjoyed season 3 the most of this show. The emotional depth, the duality that the season brings was a treat to watch. It is way ahead of its times. In 2012 people didn't appreciate slow burns as much. The ending was just so poetic!! it is because of the way it ended, it had a profound effect on me And I kept thinking and going back to it! The nuances with which they wrote and directed this show is unparalleled!!
