Star Wars Characters and Cast: Real-life Ages

Star Wars is a much-loved, multi-generational saga with characters that have become household names.

We’ve seen beloved characters such as Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia as babies right up to their surprisingly early deaths (Luke at age 53, Leia at 54). Anakin Skywalker grew from a bowl-cut-haired child to a half-robot, middle-aged Sith Lord.

Filmed over almost 50 years, Star Wars has sometimes required multiple actors to play a single character. For example, nine actors have played live-action versions of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.

Star Wars is also unique in having original actors return decades later to reprise their roles. Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford all returned more than 30 years after their last Star Wars film to play Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo.

This means audiences have had the (sometimes bittersweet) privilege of watching the actors age too.

Fisher was only 19 in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, but tragically did not live to complete her role in the saga – dying at age 60 before she could film Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.

Other actors aged into their roles perfectly by mere chance. Ian McDiarmid, at 37, was younger than Harrison Ford when he played the decrepit Emperor Palpatine in Return of the Jedi. This meant he aged perfectly to play the younger, scheming Palpatine in The Phantom Menace.

There are many surprising age differences between Star Wars characters and the actors who played them – sometimes over decades.

Here we look at 15 of the most popular characters, their age across the films and TV shows, and the age of the actors portraying them.

1. Luke Skywalker

Luke Skywalker actors

Mark Hamill was 25 years old when he filmed A New Hope, playing 19-year-old Luke Skywalker. He was 28 during The Empire Strikes Back, to Luke’s 22, and 31 in Return of the Jedi, to Luke’s 23.

Hamill returned as 53-year-old Luke in The Force Awakens, at the age of 63, and in The Last Jedi, at 65. Luke Skywalker did not survive the latter film, but 67-year-old Hamill returned to play Force Ghost Luke in the Rise of Skywalker.

In The Mandalorian and the Book of Boba Fett, special effects were used for Mark Hamill to appear Luke’s age of 28 years old. Max Lloyd-Jones played his body double in the Mandalorian and Graham Hamilton in The Book of Boba Fett.

In Obi-Wan Kenobi, 9-year-old Grant Feely played 10-year-old Luke Skywalker.

2. Leia Organa

Carrie Fisher was 19 in A New Hope, the exact age of Princess Leia Organa. She similarly played 22-year-old Leia at the same age in The Empire Strikes Back, but was 25 to Leia’s 23 in Return of the Jedi.

Fisher returned to play 53-year-old Leia in The Force Awakens at age 58, and The Last Jedi at 60. Tragically, Fisher passed away shortly after filming the latter. Unused and archival footage was repurposed for 54-year-old Leia to appear in The Rise of Skywalker.

Swedish actress Ingvild Delia played Leia’s body double for her brief climactic scene in Rogue One, at age 29.

In Obi-Wan Kenobi, 10-year-old Leia is a major character. She was portrayed by 10-year-old Vivien Lyra Blair.

Ford returned for The Force Awakens at age 72, when Han was 66 years old. Han Solo was killed in the latter film but returned as a memory ghost in The Rise of Skywalker. Ford returned as Han for the latter film at age 76.

Palpatine became the surprise villain of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. McDiarmid was 75 in The Rise of Skywalker, as the approximately 118-year-old ‘zombie’ Palpatine.
