I watched Superfly (1972)

'70s

Pretty awesome og blaxploitation film about a drug dealing kung fu priest trying to turn his life around. This is a movie where you can tell everyone was having a blast and tried their best to make a kickass movie.

The soundtrack is absolutely killer and steals the show for the entire movie. In fact there are multiple scenes that seem to exist solely to let the soundtrack play. Not much actually happened in the movie, it was mainly talking about doing things and driving around. Tbh your enjoyment of this movie depends on how much you like jazz (which I thankfully do).

The main character is really the only character that is memorable but he carries the movie so well due to being the grooviest chillest motherfucker to ever live. Overall I’d recommend it if you like classic blaxploitation, funky jazz tunes, and an extremely strong vintage NY vibe. 6.5/10

Fun piece of trivia: the Curtis Mayfield soundtrack is one of the few examples where the album outsold the film

I remember watching an interview with Mayfield that he saw the chance to make the soundtrack as a way to condemn the lifestyle. He used the music as an angel on the devil's shoulder

I was one of many who bought the album.

Possibly the best ever movie soundtrack. As to the movie itself? I saw it once a few years ago, don't remember anything about it except that I found it a bit dull.

Kind of like Shaft, the movie was just mid, it was Isaac Hayes's song that everybody remembers.

I watched it last year for the first time. I was expecting more violence and tense moments and fun. Not really any of that in the movie at all sadly

The man of the hour has an air of great power The dudes have envied him for so long

Oooh, Super Fly You're gonna make your fortune by and by But if you lose, don't ask no questions why The only game you know is do or die

Ron O'Neal was excellent in this. He was a classically trained actor. He was never unfortunately able to break out from this character he created and died of pancreatic cancer in 2004, the day after Superfly debuted on DVD. He was only 66, younger than me!

The soundtrack is one of the best out there. The NY street scenes are something else too.

Such a classic film.

RIP Ron!

Best sound track in the game

Ok you sold me on the soundtrack. Will watch

Super Fly (1972) R

Never a dude like this one! He's got a plan to stick it to The Man!

Priest, a suave top-rung New York City drug dealer, decides that he wants to get out of his dangerous trade. Working with his reluctant friend, Eddie, Priest devises a scheme that will allow him to make a big deal and then retire. When a desperate street dealer informs the police of Priest's activities, Priest is forced into an uncomfortable arrangement with corrupt narcotics officers. Setting his plan in motion, he aims to both leave the business and stick it to the man.

I watched this for the first time on Cinemax back in 1997. I ate 4 hits of acid and this movie was awesome! The bathtub scene had him and the girl covered in frogs! I’ll never forget this great movie. Cool soundtrack!

Same, I was tripping absolute monkey tits off of lsd and the soundtrack as well as the time period’s vibe were fucking legendary. Shit like this makes me wish I could make my own movie or album
