History

PAUL VOGT can now be "streamed" on all your devices (right at home) in shows like PERFECT HARMONY on NBC (the network where he recently appeared in the sparkling musical event HAIRSPRAY LIVE!) or on Disney+ in PRINCESS DIARIES 2! He was seen as an alien on The Orville on Fox and you might have seen him live on stage in HAIRSPRAY! on Broadway or when he toured live across the country, reprising the role of Amos (the put-upon often overlooked husband) in "the longest-running American musical" CHICAGO, a role he performed twice on Broadway.

Originally from Buffalo, New York, Vogt landed Hollywood recognition as the breakout star of NBC's The Rerun Show when he portrayed Mrs. Garrett from The Facts of Life. Soon after, he became a permanent cast member on MADtv (FOX's successful late-night sketch comedy show) and appeared in several movies directed by renown film-maker Garry Marshall, including The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Valentine’s Day, Raising Helen and most recently in the upcoming film Mother’s Day.

Paul received classical theater training from the State University College at Buffalo, where he was privileged to work with Warren Enters and Tom Fontana. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts: Theater (with a concentration in Directing). Soon after, he was hired by the Walt Disney Company to perform at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, where he was an original “opening cast member” of Streetmosphere at the then Disney/MGM Studios, performed at the Comedy Warehouse on Pleasure Island, and in the Hoop Dee Do Musical Review.

While in Florida, Paul continued to perform on stage, winning awards (Best Actors for his portrayal of “Sam Byck” in Stephen Sondheim's musical Assassins and for playing nearly 20 roles in Greater Tuna) and garnered critical acclaim for his theater work (including Orlando Theatre Project: Below the Belt, Sylvia, Losing Weight; Orlando Shakespeare Festival: playing the title character in Coriolanus, Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing; Orlando Opera Company: The Fantasticks). He was also the founding member and director of "The Paul Vogt Improv Group" which appeared at Civic Theatre of Central Florida and at the Disney Institute.

Vogt was “discovered” in Florida (with his identical twin, Peter) when they were cast in Barry Sonnenfeld's quirky ABC series Maximum Bob starring Beau Bridges, and after moving to Burbank, Garry Marshall quickly cast him as “Jimbo Milachi” in the musical version of his hit TV show Happy Days.

Critics claimed he could “command a stage with his comic timing and acting ability” and soon he was being cast from his performance as a mean Milachi Brother in Happy Days to a successful career in film and television: Chicago Hope, In-Laws, Arrested Development, Raising Hope, Reno 911. He starred in a Disney Channel pilot Pack of Wolves as a villain with a lizard, appeared on Glee as a Community Theater Director with Neil Patrick Harris, on Grey’s Anatomy as an opera singer and Hannah Montana as a loud, obnoxious neighbor. Vogt even hosted the 2003 Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards with the cast of MADtv and taped a commentary for a special on E! Entertainment Television about Celebrity Siblings.

If you’ve got kids, they’ve seen him too. Besides the Disney hit Hannah Montana, Paul appeared as “Bob the Dogcatcher” in Good Boy! (MGM/Henson Productions) and his voice can be heard as several characters in Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch from Walt Disney Animation, in the feature film Igor (as a man-headed fly), and in Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Masters for Dreamworks.

Paul Vogt proudly made his Broadway Debut in Hairspray! as “Edna Turnblad” on January 30, 2007 with Jere Burns, and since then he’s played Tracy’s loveable mom all over the country, even following-up the incomparable Harvey Fierstein at the Luxor in Las Vegas.

His regional stage work continues in shows like: Oliver at the Tony-winning Arena Stage in Washington DC, in the world premiere musical Minsky’s in LA, the world premiere musical Idaho! in NY, he’s the only man to ever be approved by Disney to play the beloved villain “Ursula” in Disney’s The Little Mermaid at the Muny in St. Louis, and starred in a pre-Broadway production of Disney’s Aladdin.

Although he’s performed all over the country, he still calls Hollywood home and occasionally even appears on stage there as well, recently in the West Coast Premiere of the play Laurel and Hardy as “Oliver Hardy” at the Falcon Theatre, or with the Troubadour Theater Company, and he’s even made his grand opera debut at LA Opera in The Grand Duchess Of Gerolstein. Paul also continues his improv and sketch comedy as a frequent celebrity guest at LA’s most famous comedy troupe “The Groundlings.”

Besides performing, Paul has written his first children’s book Billy Butler and the SnowDog, which will be released in time for the holidays in 2016.
