With his recording of Igor Stravinsky's Anti-War Music Theatre " The Soldiers,34; Waters continues his long-standing musical engagement with the theme of war and the personal loss of his father in the Second and Grandfather in World War II. Waters already dealt with this topic within the famous Pink Floyd albums, The Wall" or “34; The Final Cut" Waters has already dealt with this topic. The album is released shortly before the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice of Compiègne, which ended the First World War on 11 November 1918, and shortly after the 100th anniversary of the premiere of Stravinsky's Music Theatre on 28 September 1918. Water's personal connection to Stravinsky's work is clearly evident. Thus, he gives the soldier a southern English accent from the working class - Waters himself comes from Surrey in the south of England - and lets the figure of the speaker appear quietly and objectively in high-level language. When there is a dispute between the devil and the soldier, Waters speaks with so much energy and cold anger that you suddenly feel the drama of the little man who risks too much. With his " story of soldiers" (originally " L'histoire du soldier & #34;), Stravinsky wanted to shake up his listeners. Roger Waters revived the piece together with dedication and dedication to musicians from the prestigious Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival.

Jackanory, Jackanory..., older listeners will probably be automatically transported back in time to that BBC TV programme when listening to this I venture? This is essentially a talking book with Stravinsky musical interludes. Followers will know from The Wall etc Waters fancies himself as an impressionist, Scottish school teachers, German accents etc his speciality/stock in trade. On this, for once, he gets the chance to stretch and indulge himself in the art. Sometimes he can be unintentionally humorous in his attempts at mimicry but nevertheless remains engaging enough to carry the piece. Personally, I'm reminded of Bowie's Peter & The Wolf for some reason. Lou Reed The Raven too. It's all in that area but spoiler alert not a trace of rock on this album. However, it's all Waters unlike Ca Ira and for my money much more accessible than that piece to the casual listener. Waters has all the attributes to be a voice-over actor as a lot of his work to date has hinted at. This looks to be like a direction he is heading in career-wise should he give up the political rock concept type activism. Some chance... This comes highly recommended to all Waters' and Floyd fans who appreciate his conceptual and sometimes visionary genius. In my humble opinion of course.

Although this is very good,and roger waters dramatisation of the voices is excellent and the music is superb its not quite as good as the version with christopher lee narating and the Scottish chamber orchestra playing some of the dialogue on waters version has been changed im sure ramuz wouldn’t have agreed to that but on the whole its good

"The Soldiers' Tale" ... is a most intriguing listen.

First off, I thought I had a faulty CD as it took three times to load; but it now plays OK. If you're expecting 'classic' Pink Floyd or 'typical' Roger Waters solo music you'll be disappointed, but if you like S.F Sorrow or Betjeman's Banana Blush by Jim Parker you may find the album an interesting variant on an audiobook. The raft of characters and voices, the fantastic delivery and inflexions in the voice we are familiar with are great and require careful listening. The album is something you need to sit down with, listen to carefully, and not have on as background 'music' in the car.

The text size in the CD booklet is small and I hope it will be available, somewhere, as a .pdf as I would like to read it whilst listening to the narration.
