15 Best Things to Do in Kilkenny Ireland

1. Kilkenny Castle and Gardens

The iconic castle is definitely the top attraction in Kilkenny! It boasts gorgeous views of the city and the River Nore, beautiful grounds, and an insight into the history of Ireland’s ancient families.

Kilkenny Castle is a stunning castle in the heart of Kilkenny, Ireland. The original structure, probably a wooden castle, was built in the 12th century by Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke — more famously known as Strongbow.

The grand stone castle you see today was constructed in the 13th century by William Marshall, 4th Earl of Pembroke. The square castle featured 4 round towers (3 of which still stand today).

For centuries, the castle was home to the Butlers of Ormonde (who had changed their name to ‘Butler’ after being appointed Chief Butler of Ireland by King Henry II). The site was abandoned due to unrest and in 1967, the deteriorating castle was sold to the Castle Restoration Committee for only £50!

The castle has been carefully restored and now offers visitors guided tours, giving them an insight into the fascinating history of Kilkenny. You can take a self-guided tour, or for just a few euros more, a guided walking tour of the castle.

I took the guided tour and highly recommend it. You learn so much more about the history of the castle that way and get some interesting trivia as well. For example, you pass by a large toilet, and learn that it was installed in the castle to prepare for a visit from the king. (Yay, indoor plumbing!)

My favorite part was the last stop on the tour, the amazing picture gallery. This grand, high-ceilinged hall is light and spacious. Admire the paintings and the series of large tapestries. Be sure to look up at the ceiling to appreciate the colorful, intricate designs painted on the woodwork!

And don’t forget to explore the stunning grounds and gardens surrounding Kilkenny Castle (they’re free). The beautifully landscaped grounds include a rose garden to the north of the castle, and the large castle park to the south. Revel in the beauty of one of the best castles in Ireland!

This famous castle and its grounds are definitely one of the best places to visit in Kilkenny!

(I definitely recommend staying near Kilkenny Castle — my hotel was just across the river and had phenomenal views!)

2. St. Canice’s Cathedral and Round Tower

St. Canice’s Cathedral has a long and fascinating history and is one of the best things to see in Kilkenny.

Built in the 13th century, it is the second-longest cathedral in Ireland (after St. Patrick’s Cathedral , one of the top attractions in Dublin). The architecture and interior of St. Canice’s is breathtaking, with a soaring Gothic nave and beautiful stained-glass windows.

The Cathedral’s graveyard is also worth exploring, as it’s full of interesting old gravestones and memorials.

There is a small fee to visit the cathedral, but it’s worth it. There’s a lot to see inside the cathedral, including tombs of many members of the famous Butler family, the Chair of St. Kieran (where Bishops of Ireland are enthroned), and an incredible pipe organ.

The cathedral site also contains the well-known Round Tower, a ten-story ancient structure which dates back to the 9th century. It’s the oldest standing structure in Kilkenny! Visitors can climb the Round Tower for fantastic views of Kilkenny city.

Climbing the Round Tower at St. Canice’s Cathedral is one of the most unforgettable activities in Kilkenny Ireland!

There is also a fee to climb the tower, or you can save a little money on these Kilkenny attractions and buy a combination ticket for both the cathedral and the tower.

Usually when you climb a tower, it has a spiral staircase. That is *not* the case with the Round Tower!

To climb the Round Tower, you need to climb up a series of ladders, which get increasingly steep as the tower narrows towards the top. At the very end, there are a few steep stone steps to climb to get to the top.

I have a fear of heights, so this was a rough climb for me. It’s certainly not for everyone! I’m proud that I did it, but I wouldn’t do it again. (And the muscles in my arms and legs were sore for days after that climb!)

3. Take a stroll along the River Nore or enjoy the Canal Walk

The River Nore is one of Kilkenny’s most beautiful natural attractions, and a fantastic spot to relax and take in some stunning views.

Kilkenny is famous for its picturesque river views (colorful riverside cottages, anyone?). A stroll along the River Nore is a must for anyone visiting this beautiful city.

The Canal Walk is one of Kilkenny’s local favorites. Stretching along the River Nore and circling around the castle grounds, this peaceful path is a great way to enjoy nature.

Start your journey at Canal Square, where St. John’s Bridge crosses the river. Then follow the river alongside the medieval castle walls.

The Canal Walk is popular with the locals for outdoor activities such as walking, jogging or cycling. I enjoyed meeting the dogs taking their walks along the riverfront path!

(Walking the canals is popular throughout Ireland. There was even a canal path through Enfield, where I stayed at the Johnstown Estate for four months.)

There are several stops along the route where you can take a break and enjoy the scenery, or where you can pop through the walls and access the grounds of Kilkenny Castle.

4. Enjoy a tasty treat

One of the best things to do in Kilkenny in summer is to enjoy some tasty ice cream! And one of the best places to get your ice cream fix is at Kitty’s Cabin.

Kitty’s Cabin is conveniently located in Canal Square, so it’s the perfect place to stop for a delicious treat before taking a canal walk or heading over to Kilkenny Castle.

Enjoying a soft serve ice cream cone is one of the best things to do in Kilkenny in the summer!

Try the ‘large 99’ — a towering swirl of soft serve garnished with a chocolate flake candy. At only 2 euros, this is definitely the best bargain you’ll find in Kilkenny.

It’s certainly big enough to share.. but I won’t tell if you want one all for yourself!

5. Rothe House and Garden

Rothe House and Garden is a unique historic site in Kilkenny that provides visitors with an insight into the lives of wealthy merchant families of the 16th century.

This three-house complex with connecting courtyards is the only one of its kind in Ireland that is open to the public. The burgage plot runs all the way from its front facing Parliament Street, back to Kilkenny’s original city wall.

The house contains several interesting artifacts collected by the Kilkenny Archaeological Society, originating from the city and the surrounding region.

Definitely take the guided tour — it’s only slightly more expensive than the self-guided version.

For many visitors, the gardens are the best part of the experience! The gardens had once been turned into a parking lot and have been painstakingly restored. Check out the beautiful blooms, herbs, and manicured plantings.

6. Killkenny Smithwick’s Experience

Learn all about the history of the famous Smithwick’s Brewery, from the process of beer-making to the family’s legacy. Smithwick’s was founded in Kilkenny back in 1710, so it’s definitely a local favorite!

7. The Butler Gallery

The Butler Gallery is a combination art gallery and museum featuring an impressive collection of contemporary art from both Irish and international artists. it’s the perfect place to explore if you’re looking for something a bit different.

Established in 1843, the Butler Gallery is one of Kilkenny’s best cultural attractions. The Gallery was previously housed in the basement of Kilkenny Castle, but was moved into the Evans’ Home, a repurposed 19th century alms house.

It houses one of the foremost collections of modern and contemporary art in the country and includes a permanent collection of important Irish art. One wing is dedicated to the art of Callan artist, Tony O’Malley.

Visiting the Butler Gallery is one of the best free things to do in Kilkenny!

8. St. Mary’s Cathedral

St Mary’s Cathedral is an impressive 19th-century cathedral located in the heart of Kilkenny. Completed in 1857, it sits on Kilkenny’s highest point.

You can see the grand tower of St. Mary’s Cathedral from Kilkenny Castle. If you’re touring the castle, be sure to look out the windows for some lovely views of the rose garden and fountain, with the spires of St. Mary’s in the distance.

The cathedral has beautiful Gothic architecture, with soaring stone arches, high windows and vibrant stained-glass designs. Marvel at the elaborately carved altars, magnificent gilded mosaics, and the intricately decorated dome.

Take a walk around the cathedral and admire the statues on the grounds, including the beautiful monument of Marian.

Kilkenny is full of excellent restaurants and pubs offering delicious traditional Irish dishes.

No visit to Kilkenny would be complete without sampling some hearty Irish fare. Enjoy a plate of fish and chips, or tuck into a warm bowl of Irish stew. Sample a pint of Guinness or a Smithwick’s Ale and listen to traditional (‘trad’) Irish music in one of Kilkenny’s cozy pubs.

No matter what you’re in the mood for, Kilkenny restaurants have something for everyone! So come hungry and enjoy all that Ireland’s medieval city has to offer.

Some great places to eat in Kilkenny are:

  • The Terrace at the Kilkenny River Court Hotel: I stayed here and loved the views from the Terrace restaurant. A plate of fish and chips with stunning views of Kilkenny Castle? Yes, please!

  • Matt the Millers – Try Matt’s famous Clonakilty Chicken in this cozy riverside pub with traditional music nightly. I enjoyed a beef and Guinness stew here on a day it was pouring buckets!

  • Langtons – Sample some delicious traditional Irish dishes in one of Kilkenny’s favorite pubs (voted pub of the year a record 5 times!)

10. St. Mary’s Medieval Mile Museum

Learn about Kilkenny’s rich history at St. Mary’s Medieval Mile Museum. This interactive museum is located in the heart of Kilkenny’s medieval quarter and contains a wealth of information about the city’s past.

This unique Kilkenny attraction is part museum, part graveyard, and part archaeological site.

The museum is housed in a 13th-century church and graveyard.

There are plenty of artefacts on display, including ancient coins, texts, and swords. My favorite items are the elaborate carved stone monuments, especially the detailed Celtic cross designs.

You can take a self-guided tour (with audio), or a guided tour with an enthusiastic local guide. The St. Mary’s Medieval Mile Museum is kid-friendly, with a ‘Lego hunt’ activity to engage the younger members of your family.

The museum also offers ‘Medieval Mile Trail’ walking tours of Kilkenny, taking you on a memorable journey through Kilkenny’s cobblestone lanes. Hear tales about Kilkenny’s history and see historic buildings such as the Rothe House and Richard Shee’s Alms House. These tours get rave reviews!

The Black Abbey is one of Kilkenny’s oldest and most iconic buildings. This Dominican church and priory, founded by William Marshall, the first Earl of Pembroke, dates back to the year 1255.

The Black Abbey is known its dramatic dark-stone Gothic architecture, but its most impressive feature is its massive stained-glass Rosary window. It’s said to be the largest stained-glass window in Ireland! (So be sure to go inside the Abbey to admire the beautiful window — it’s one of best things to see in Kilkenny!)

You may be wondering, why is it called the Black Abbey? I thought it was because the building was constructed from a dark stone, but the name comes from the term ‘Black Friars’ which is used to refer to those belonging to the Dominican Order.

13. National Reptile Zoo

Who says there aren’t any snakes in Ireland?

Indeed, there aren’t any snakes that are native to Ireland — whether that be thanks to St. Patrick or to the Ice Age. But you can still see snakes and other reptiles at the National Reptile Zoo!

The National Reptile Zoo, a popular Kilkenny tourist attraction, is a must-visit for families and reptile enthusiasts.

This unique zoo (the only reptile zoo in Ireland!) is home to over 80 species of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates from all over the world. Snakes, crocodiles, giant tortoises, frogs, and lizards –you can find them all in the National Reptile Zoo.

At the zoo, visitors can get up close and personal with these fascinating creatures in a safe environment. There are also plenty of interactive displays and educational talks, so you can learn all about the animals on display.

The National Reptile Zoo is one of the best things to do in Kilkenny for families — kids love being able to touch some of the critters! (Not personally my cup of tea!)

14. Jerpoint Abbey

Established in 1180, the beautiful Jerpoint Abbey is located just outside of Kilkenny and offers visitors a glimpse into monastic life in medieval Ireland.

The partially restored ruins of Jerpoint Abbey are nestled in the scenic Irish countryside, about a 20-minute drive south from Kilkenny.

This 12th-century Cistercian abbey was once home to a thriving community of monks and is now a popular tourist destination. The remains of the church, cloisters, refectory and other monastic buildings still stand today – a testament to the hard work of the monks who lived and worked here.

Visitors to Jerpoint Abbey can explore the ruins, admire the architecture with its dramatic stone arches, marvel at the carvings, and take in the stunning views of the countryside.

While you’re there, visit nearby Jerpoint Park, the site of the Lost Town of Newtown Jerpoint. Plus, this family-owned farm offers sheepdog demonstrations!

Looking for some excitement and fun for the entire family? Take a 20-minute drive north from Kilkenny and explore the Castlecomer Discovery Park!

Castlecomer Discovery Park is the perfect spot for some outdoor fun. This family-friendly adventure park offers plenty of activities. Enjoy a thrilling ride on Ireland’s longest zip line, test your nerve on the high ropes course, or show your off your skills at the archery range.

For a more relaxing day spend a day on the lake. You can rent a peddle boat (I call them paddle boats), a canoe, or a kayak. Enjoy a peaceful walk through the woods or try your hand at orienteering. Bring a picnic and make a day of it!
