A powerhouse of a performance by one of the best quintets Archie Shepp ever had: Roswell Rudd (trombone), Grachan Moncur III (trombone), Jimmy Garrison (bass) and Beaver Harris (drums). The 40-minute performance starts with a 7-minute bass solo from Garrison, reminiscent of his best work with Coltrane. Shepp's solos are muscular virtuoso performances as usual, even though he does go into a surprisingly lyrical mode at times. He is supported by Rudd in an unusual dixieland mood, complemented by the excellent, somewhat mellower Moncur. Towards the end, Shepp's fiery attacks give way to an almost beautiful structure of layered melodies. The recording ends with two minutes of the audience calling for an encore. You can't blame them.
