From a true incident that happened in 1960s Japan. This drama is contemporary in setting but medieval in its characters and emotions as it focuses on a tangled web of murder and deceit encountered by a beautiful woman, Kayo (Sayuri Yoshinaga) after her abusive husband is murdered.

Felt like prime Nomura, so that is a compliment.
This is a very elegant and stately drama, starring Sayuri Yoshinaga, who is bloody great in this. Minus winning most of the Japaneses best actress awards across the board for this, she won her first Japan Academy Prize - Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for both Ohan and this. Sayuri Yoshinaga would go on to win this prize four times, and possibly may still hold the record.

the snowy parts are crazy, the kind of somber that brings you back to all the masterpieces that got you there.

At the time this came out Japanese audiences were scandalized by some of the roles the actors took on for their cruelty and their nudity. I think the cruelty in the film still has some power to shock even today. Wrapped around this twisted tale is some of the most beautifully shot Japanese scenery committed to film. It's a beautiful, cruel, and transient world.
From the opening scene we know where the narrative will eventually lead our protagonist. Despite knowing this you share a pathetic desire with her for her to eventually get what she wants. I think a sign that the movie achieves this well is that her actions and complicity seem diminished at the time of watching, however…
what a star cast for such a controversial movie. but the boldest and the most provocative performance was of sayuri yoshinaga, so sensitive, powerful and beautiful at the same time. i think its become a trend of mine to stumble across tragic stories with sayuri at this point.
shout out to toshiyuki nishida's oddball character and tomokazu miura's hateful persona.
