Clemson Memorial Stadium History

It was constructed way back in 1942, and undergone several renovations since. A defining feature of the stadium is Howard’s Rock. It was given to head coach Frank Howard by a friend, from the actual Death Valley in California. After sitting in the coach’s office for a few years, it ended up on a pedestal at the top of the east end zone hill, where the players run into Memorial Stadium. That was in 1967 and has been tradition ever since.

The sections at Clemson Memorial are lettered, with either a U (upper) or TD (top deck) declaring the level the tickets are in. The lower level seats are simply lettered. The sections adjacent to The Hill are the only double lettered section (AA & KK).

The vast majority of seats are bleacher seating, meaning no chair backs. The only designated sections with chair backs are the West Zone Club and covered seats. You may find chair backs in other sections, but that is because long time season ticket holders will have chairbacks fastened to their seat number.

Clemson Tigers Parking & Tailgating

Here is the best resource on the parking at Clemson Memorial Stadium.

Tailgating Tips via Trip Advisor

“It’ll be dependent on a couple of factors, but the most important factor is kickoff time. If kickoff is at noon or 1:00, then what I would suggest is taking SC 93 from the US 123 split in Easley and taking it all the way to Clemson. If kickoff is later in the day or at night, then stick with US 123. I would try to be in Clemson at least two hours before kickoff, three preferably.

As for tailgate spots… I’m assuming you’re not an IPTAY member, so you will have to park a bit further away from the stadium than those who are. I typically park on the roads leading to the Hendrix Student Center, on the east side of campus. Another good spot is near the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts. Clemson fans generally are friendly enough to invite visitors to tailgate spots, so finding places to meet folks and eat is always quick and easy.

Linked here is a link that shows game day traffic flows (reverse lane) and parking areas. Be sure you aren’t parked in an IPTAY area, as your car will be towed away.
