Vote up your favorite twin duos in anime.

Sibling relationships in anime can be fascinating no matter the set-up, but one kind of relationship that really stands out are anime characters who are twins.

Some anime characters who are twins have relatively normal relationships - Osamu and Atsumu Miya from Haikyuu!! have many similarities, but are clearly their own people. They get along okay but sometimes argue - just as one might expect from actual twins. In other cases, things are a bit more dramatic: Knives is actively trying to destroy his twin Vash in Trigun - that or get him to join his violent cause.

Which set of anime twins do you like the best?

Most divisive: Mairu & Kururi Orihara - 'Durarara!!'

Muichiro doesn't really understand his brother until the two of them meet with a terrible fate. After that, he temporarily adopts his brother's stoic personality before rediscovering his own.

Atsumu & Osamu Miya - 'Haikyuu!!'

Atsumu & Osamu Miya - 'Haikyuu!!'

The Miya twins are some of the toughest foes that Karasuno has to face. Osamu is a talented spiker while Atsumu is an incredible setter. Osamu tends to be a bit more chill, while Atsumu is more hot-headed. Still, both of them are extremely competitive and work hard to bring their team to victory.

Maki & Mai Zenin - 'Jujutsu Kaisen'

Maki & Mai Zenin - 'Jujutsu Kaisen'
    • Photo:

Maki and Mai Zenin were once close, but these days they can't stand each other. Both of them were ostracized by the Zenin clan - Mai for having a weak Cursed ability and Mai for having none at all. But while Maki decided that she was going to strike out on her own, Mai was still invested in trying to please their family and earn their favor.

This created a rift between them that's not going to heal without a lot of therapy.

For many anime fans - especially millennial women - these two are some of the most iconic anime twins out there. The two of them are an integral part of the Ouran High School Host Club. They play up their appeal as twins who are maybe a little bit in love with each other.

In reality, though, they have a more normal relationship, and the two have different personalities and goals. Both have a mischievous streak, but Kaoru is a lot more mature.

Aqua & Ruby Hoshino - 'Oshi no Ko'

Aqua & Ruby Hoshino - 'Oshi no Ko'

Two people are reincarnated as the twin children of Ai Hoshino, a teenage idol with major star power. The boy, Aqua, used to be Ai's doctor. The girl, Ruby, was once a twelve-year-old cancer patient at the hospital where the doctor worked.

Both of them remember their own pasts, but have no idea about their twin's origin. As such, they develop a sibling relationship, with Aqua being outwardly disdainful and inwardly protective of Ruby, while Ruby complains but is secretly grateful.

      • White Fox

Ram and Rem are demon twins who work as maids in Roswaal Mathers' home. They were born with one horn each, which meant they were considered inferior in their clan and were nearly executed before Ram displayed her strength and saved them both. But Ram ultimately lost her horn when the village was attacked, and they both lost their families.

For Rem, this resulted in a deep sense of inferiority, which is part of what made her identify with and fall in love with Subaru. Meanwhile, Ram ended up developing a complex around Roswaal, who was responsible for saving them and giving them a home.

Yukio & Rin Okumura - 'Blue Exorcist'

Yukio & Rin Okumura - 'Blue Exorcist'

Though Rin and Yukio are both the biological sons of Satan, only Rin actually inherited their dad's demonic powers. This is because Yukio was too frail and weak in utero to be able to inherit them.

They continued to be pretty different throughout their lives. While Rin had the personality of a typical shonen protagonist, Yukio was fearful and emotional before growing up to be an extremely strict and tight-laced person.

The two have a complicated relationship, but they do try their best to support each other.

    Androids 17 & 18 - 'Dragon Ball Z'

    Androids 17 & 18 - 'Dragon Ball Z'

Though their original names are Lapis and Lazuli, these two still go by Android 17 and 18. They got those names after being forcibly transformed into Androids by Dr. Gero for the purpose of defeating Goku. Both of them resent Dr. Gero greatly, but at first they're on board with the whole destroying Goku thing - particularly Android 17 who sees it as a game.

These days, the two have gotten married to other people and have had children, but they still have a close sibling relationship.

    Tsukasa & Hanako Yugi - 'Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun'

    Tsukasa & Hanako Yugi - 'Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun'
    • Photo:

The connection between these twins is only vaguely hinted at in the anime, and some of it is definitely a manga spoiler, so we won't go into full detail.

But these twins have a difficult relationship. Currently, both of them are supernatural entities with opposite views on how the supernatural should interact with humans: Hanako believes that rules should be followed, while Tsukasa thinks that everyone should do whatever they want. But what Tsukasa wants to do involves manipulating others and causing huge amounts of trouble.

Some of that manipulation revolves around their troubled past: while they were alive, Hanako ended Tsukasa's life. The reason isn't fully explained in the anime, but Tsukasa seems to only care about this for the purposes of using it to make Hanako feel guilty.

Nashiro & Kurona Yasuhisa - 'Tokyo Ghoul'

Nashiro & Kurona Yasuhisa - 'Tokyo Ghoul'

These twins have a truly tragic story. They went from being innocent little girls dreaming of opening a pastry shop to having their parents eaten by a ghoul right in front of them. They were taken in by the CCG and trained to become ghoul investigators.

Kurona was desperate to protect her sister and would do anything, even put herself in danger, to do so. When Nashiro was wounded during battle, Kurona decided to absorb her body into her kagune as a last resort to save her life. Though she now believes that her sister is alive inside of her, her decision is actually what finally ended Nashiro's life.

    Vash & Knives - 'Trigun'

    Vash & Knives - 'Trigun'

Vash and Knives might be twins, but they have very different philosophies on life. For Vash, the most important thing is to protect humanity. Knives would prefer to destroy humanity, since he sees them as responsible for Plants being used for their energy despite their capacity for sentience.

Knives wants Vash to fight for his own people, and he's willing to use violence to get him to agree. But Vash's principles are just as strong, if not stronger, than Knives'.

Karin & Yuzu Kurosaki - 'Bleach'

Karin & Yuzu Kurosaki - 'Bleach'

Karin and Yuzu Kurosaki are Ichigo's younger sisters. Like Ichigo, Karin can see spirits, while Yuzu can only see faint outlines. The two have very different personalities - Karin is more assertive and self-reliant, while Yuzu is more empathetic and helpful.

These traits may have developed in reaction to their mother's demise. Both girls wanted to be helpful. Yuzu decided to take charge of the cooking and cleaning. Karin couldn't think of any way to contribute, so she decided that she would concentrate on not causing any problems instead.

Hänsel & Gretel - 'Black Lagoon'

Hänsel & Gretel - 'Black Lagoon'

You do not want to get anywhere near this pair of twins. The two were hired as assassins, but for them it's more than just a job: it's a passion.

Due to the extreme abuse they suffered as younger children, which included both sexual abuse and being forced to take lives, they started to truly enjoy the process. This meant joyfully torturing people and literally bathing in their victim's blood, as well as getting way, way too flirty with each other. If there's a creepier pair of twins out there, we're not sure we want to know about them.

    Nina & Johan - 'Monster'

    Nina & Johan - 'Monster'

Nina and Johan have what might be one of the most complicated relationships on this list. The two were born as a result of a eugenics experiment that was meant to create the “perfect” children. Later, Nina - then called Anna - was sent to the Red Rose Mansion, where she endured further experimentation. Their mother was supposed to choose a twin to go, and while she originally chose her son, she changed her mind at the last second.

Johan would spend most of his life either pretending to be his sister or actually conflating his life with hers. He'd also spend it being a serial killer, which is why Nina is terrified of him.

    Luna & Leo - 'Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's'

    Luna & Leo - 'Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's'

Luna and Leo - also known as Ruka and Rua in the original Japanese version - are fraternal twins who help Yusei with duels. The two of them are Signers - that is, duelists who are capable of summoning the Crimson Dragon. For Luna, this is a lot harder, since it takes a toll on her already delicate health. But still, the two of them are competent duelists and important members of their team.

Ryou & Kyou Fujibayashi - 'Clannad'

Ryou and Kyou Fujibayashi have very different personalities. While Ryou is shy and quiet, Kyou is loud and aggressive. Kyou is extremely protective of Ryou, to the point where she tries to separate Tomoya from other girls because she knows that Ryou has a crush on him. During this process, Kyou also develops feelings for Tomoya, which creates a rift between the twins.

Mairu & Kururi Orihara - 'Durarara!!'

Mairu & Kururi Orihara - 'Durarara!!'

Mairu and Kururi are Izaya's younger sisters, and they're just as strange as he is - probably because they were more or less raised by him. At one point, the three of them rolled dice to randomly select personality traits they'd embody, and they've done that ever since.

For Mairu, this means being extroverted, assertive, and kind of perverted. For Kururi, it means being quiet but dangerous. The two swap personalities when they go online.

Jojiro & Jotaro - 'Run with the Wind'

While Jota and Joji really want to be differentiated from one another, they're not as different as they'd like to think. The two have extremely similar extroverted and cheerful personalities, and they both have a huge crush on the same girl. Joji is a slightly faster runner, though.

Shion & Mion Sonozaki - 'Higurashi When They Cry'

Shion & Mion Sonozaki - 'Higurashi When They Cry'

The Sonozaki twins are part of a wealthy family, and the oldest twin was expected to inherit significant wealth and responsibility. This was meant to be Shion, the oldest, but the two often switched identities so that they could share the burden of endless family meetings.

On the day that Shion was meant to get the seal that would name her as the family heir, Mion was there pretending to be Shion. This locked them into the wrong identities, creating plenty of conflict as they grew older.

    Sakon & Ukon - 'Naruto'

    Sakon & Ukon - 'Naruto'

Sakon and Ukon are extremely close - so close, in fact, that they spend most of their time sharing a body. Thanks to their Kekkei Genkai, they can merge their bodies and separate at will.

Ukon spends most of his time hanging out in Sakon's body, issuing orders for his younger brother to carry out. But he does come out when Sakon needs help - either just an arm, or his whole body.
