The Cats of Copenhagen was first written for James Joyce’s most beloved audience, his only grandson, Stephen James Joyce, and sent in a letter dated September 5, 1936. Cats were clearly a common currency between Joyce and his grandson. In early August 1936, Joyce sent Stephen “a little cat filled with sweets”—a kind of Trojan cat meant to outwit grown-ups. A few weeks later, Joyce penned a letter from Copenhagen that begins “Alas! I cannot send you a Copenhagen cat because there are no cats in Copenhagen.” The letter reveals the modernist master at his most playful, yet Joyce’s Copenhagen has a keen, anti-authoritarian quality that transcends the mere whimsy of a children’s story. Only recently rediscovered, this marks the inaugural U.S. publication of The Cats of Copenhagen, a treasure for readers of all ages. L'autore

James Joyce (1882–1941) is best known for his experimental use of language and his exploration of new literary methods. His subtle yet frank portrayal of human nature, coupled with his mastery of language, made him one of the most influential novelists of the 20th century. Joyce’s use of “stream-of-consciousness” reveals the flow of impressions, half thoughts, associations, hesitations, impulses, as well as the rational thoughts of his characters. The main strength of his masterpiece novel, Ulysses (1922) lies in the depth of character portrayed using this technique. Joyce’s other major works include Dubliners, a collection of short stories that portray his native city, a semi-autobiographical novel called A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man (1916), and Finnegan’s Wake (1939).

It's James Joyce my god. I ordered it without even looking at a review. He sneaks the anti-authoritarian in between the lines and, apparently, loves cats and the little boy who is the recipient of this story. Who knew. I never noticed the cat reference in the beginning of Ulysses and probably wouldn't have put much faith in it as a reference to anything in particular. But the man hated dogs. Maybe because you always have to tell them what to do, make them behave and cats are, well, completely independent. I think if you really love cats it could be part of our cat-book-collection or if you love J.J. you could put in that ditto but I think T.S. Elliot said it just a little better. The illustrations are drawl & well-placed on the page but the cacophonous fonts make my head spin. Nice binding and pretty little book overall.

I really like that he asks his grandson at the end, "What do you think of this?". I would like to hear the reply.

Do you like books? (Good). Do you like cats? (great). Do you like books about cats? (fascinating). Are you from Copenhagen? (Sandsynligvis ikke).

Joyce wrote this for his grandson Stephen, a cute little boy who loved his grandfather, and already had a dim awareness that his 'Nonno' was a special sort of person. If you can find it, you might also like the story Joyce wrote for him about the the devil, the cat and the bridge at Beaugency. I would imagine Stephen liked this also.

What a shame then that Stephen grew up to be the Executor of James Joyce's estate, and decided to craft an oppressive regimen of repression and censure designed solely to inhibit the dissemination of his grandfather's work - even to the point of hiding behind copyright as a legal instrument to outlaw people from even quoting Joyce on the very streets of Dublin that gave 'Nonno' his canvas in the first place. If ever a family nest was delivered a 'wrong 'un' by a cuckoo, this was surely it.

Joyce once remarked of his concern that Ulysses would be appreciated by 'six or seven' readers. Stephen Joyce tried to fulfil this on his behalf, and happily, he failed. Like cats, the appreciation of Joyce extends way beyond Copenhagen, and thrives far outside the small-minded pettyocracy of a childlike world view.

Incredibly short, totally crazy, still totally funny. James Joyce in totally unpredictable style. You will ask yourself if it was worth to pay several dollars/euros for a few words - be sure, it was. This is a small jewel.

Strange, strange book. Which is good. I'm studying Joyce at Oxford right now and I wouldn't pay to have any ordinary children's book shipped here. I read this to my girlfriend and we got into a long argument about whether the police of Copenhagen are also cats, possibly punning on "fat cat" , and whether Joyce's imported cat would actually highlight and resolve the absurdities of their totalitarian system or whether the invading liberator would soon exhibit all the odious traits of the usurped. Typical of Joyce: I ordered a children's book and got a slyly subversive and cynically meta-subversive bundle of treats. Also it looks nice on a shelf next to Finnegan. And this seller's giving it up for a song so kudos for making things affordable for hungry undergrads!
