Live reviews

  • Dweezil Zappa

One of the best gigs I have ever had the pleasure to attend.

Drawing on Frank Zappa's immense back catalogue, Zappa Plays Zappa are brimful of great music, incredibly talented musicians and good humour. Front-man Dweezil Zappa has his dad's chops on guitar, playing blistering, eye-watering solos that never stray into self-indulgence but display great musicality and do full justice to the songs.

Although Frank Zappa's compositions were often complex with tricky time signatures, changes and arrangements, above all things, he entertained - and Zappa Plays Zappa did that to the full.

A party atmosphere was created by the band in the concert hall, with Dweezil even leading the crowd in some genuinely funny audience participation (and I usually can't bear audience participation). Ultimately the band rocked and funked with great songs and performances and made most other bands feel small-fry in comparison.

Whether you know Frank Zappa's music (and you're missing out if you don't) or not, I'd urge anyone to go see them.

Dweezil and his crew were superb this night. The last show in NA before heading to Europe next month as I understand. Do not fear, as he'll be back next year!

This multi-talented group were having almost as much fun playing as we were listening, leaving us all completely satiated yet wanting more as we left. (If that makes any sense) What a wonderful trip back in time yet so fresh, vivid and totally enjoyable an event. If given the chance, see Dweezil and his band, go out of your way if you have to (We went from Saskatoon)you will not regret a few hours drive and you'll have a memory that I'm sure will last.

It's only a couple of days since the concert and my face still hurts from the shit eating grin I had through the whole concert!

  • Dweezil returns to Arizona and does not dissapoint. His new "Choice Cuts" tour is a deep dive into his father's library of complex and amazing artistry. Songs ranged from the 70s on with all the persision and mastery we've come to expect. This is not the concert for those that just want to hear the humorous side like Don't Eat Yellow Snow, rather, it is a tour for the Zappa aficionado. I find it amazing that Dweezil's skills continue to get better and he is able to surround himself by like-minded musicians. Overall, the show was fun, exciting and I would recommend to all.

  • This performance showed Dweezil more relaxed than I have seen him, maybe ever. The new additions to the band, particularly Mikki Hommel on vocals, seem to have provided a much-need spark. The set list included more vocal-centric songs than in the past which provided a nice contrast to the instrumentals/extended solos. Black Napkins and a very tight, well-executed version of Zomby Woof were a couple of highlights. It was really great to finally have Ike appear with Dweezil...it was an alum reunion too long in the making.

  • What a fantastic show but an extremely talented band!!! This ensemble of 7 musicians were thoroughly entertaining and pleasing to the multigenerational audience there to pay homage to Dweezil's father, regardless what the show is billed as. Dweezil, as always, was the reason for my attendance and he did not disappoint!! He is an amazing guitarist with such a humble persona. He loves what he is doing and it is very evident in this and every other show I have seen him perform.

  • Fantastic show in Paris.***

All the band is Professional. Hard work, nice result. A pleasure to hear some of Frank Zappa master pieces. Hope seeing them again. Next 2019 ?

Sheila is unique [ let's move to Cleveland sax solo : wouah !!! ] and Dweezil great guitar player and the best for performing his father's compositions. He's a good man.

So attentive, with warm contact when meeting the audience after the show. They already miss me....

  • Dweezil never disappoints! He just gets better and better every year. It seemed like the Casino had very strict timing issues though. The concert started exactly at published time and ended after one encore song with no fan interaction afterward. But Dweezil and the band were great. The two new vocalist added some interesting dynamics to the sound. Some people didn't like the female singer, although I think she did a great job.

  • Dweezil Zappa and his band performed very well. I would have preferred more emphasis on songs with vocals than instrumental material. There was one humorous piece with the drummer singing as 'Chewbacca' that was long for the gag and associated music. I would be happy to see Dweezil and his colleagues perform again. I am glad that Frank Zappa's music is being performed live.

  • A very special concert. My two children deepened their appreciation of the musical genius of Frank Zappa through the masterful rendition of his music by Dweezil and his immensely talented tight-knit band. They have captured the well-rehearsed aura of improvisation that his father and the "old" Mothers perfected. A truly moving and uplifting evening.
