Russell Brand has been forced to cancel the remainder of his Re:Birth tour following his mother's involvement in a serious car accident.

The comedian was due to perform nine additional stand-up shows across England and Ireland. In a statement made via video on Instagram, Russell, 42, apologized and assured ticket-holders they would be refunded fully.

He said there was a possibility the tour dates will be rescheduled, though he noted that it was unlikely.

In a two-part clip posted on his personal account, Russell explained that he couldn't think about performing while his mother recovered from 'life-threatening' injuries, adding that he'd likely associate the crash and the sadness he was feeling with the stage for some time.

Russell's tour cancellation is sure to be a hit to his bank account, however, with a net worth as big as his it's nothing to worry about.

Who is Russell Brand?

Russell Edward Brand was born on June 4, 1975. He's a comedian, actor, author and activist. 

His career began with stand-up comedy and evolved from there. He appeared in his first major film, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, in 2008. The film was a hit and led to a spin-off, titled Get Him to the Greek. 

Since then, Russell has starred in a film called Arthur and done voice work in Despicable Me, Hop, Despicable Me 2 and Trolls. 

In 2013, Russell released a stand-up special called the Messiah Complex where he talked about a variety of topics including drug addiction, his heroes and more. 

Nearly five years later he announced his upcoming show, Re:Birth, which began in April 2017. The remainder of the tour was cancelled however.

How did Russell Brand make his money? 

Russell Brand has made the majority of his money as a comedian and an actor. He's appeared in major films like Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2 and Trolls. 

In addition to acting and comedy, Russell has had quite a career as a presenter. He was brought on as a video journalist at MTV in 2000, but was fired for coming to work dressed as Osama bin Laden one day after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C.

After he left MTV, Russell started a television show called RE: Brand, where he examined taboos in society. The show was cancelled eventually, however.

Russell Brand announced his Re:Birth tour in February 2017. The tour began that April and was still going until the British funny-man's mother was involved in a bad car accident. 

The next show was due to take place on May 1, 2018 at the 02 Apollo in Manchester, England. That, and the other eight shows scheduled after it, has been cancelled.

Russell Brand's mother is called Barbara Elizabeth Brand. She's 71 years old and is currently battling life-threatening injuries after being involved in a serious car accident.  

Barbara was a passenger in the car, which was being driven by a friend of Russell's to go babysit her granddaughter. 

The driver was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries resulting from the crash, but has already been released. He's called Taz.

In an Instagram video, Russell said: 'The man who was driving was a friend of mine. What I suppose I would like to say is how I am reminded, as I have been many times across my life is the importance and significance of the NHS who have already saved her life on six occasions, my mum has had cancer six times.' 

Russell continued: 'I'm sad for my mum. She's vulnerable. She only finished chemotherapy a month ago so for her to be in this situation is really difficult.'

Barbara has beaten uterus cancer and breast cancer. 

An arrest has been made in the crash, which is being called a hit-and-run.

Russell Brand's daughter, Mabel Brand, was born in November 2016. She's the only child he and wife Laura Gallacher have together though it's been rumored she's pregnant with their second.
