  • John Sheffield, 1st Duke of Buckingham and Normanby, 1st Marquess of Normanby, 3rd Earl of Mulgrave KG  (1647–1721) married, thirdly, Lady Catherine Darnley (1680- 1743), an illegitimate daughter of James II of Great Britain and Catherine Sedley, Countess of Dorchester.

  • Edmund Sheffield, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Normanby (1716–1735)

Following the death of the 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Normanby,the  greater part of the Sheffield family estates, including the principal residence at Normanby Park, passed to his half-brother, Sir Charles Herbert later Sheffield, 1st Bt., the illegitimate son of his father by his mistress Frances Lambert. The estate of Mulgrave Castle, co. York, passed to his mother, the Dowager Duchess of Buckingham & Normanby, and on her death in 1742 passed to her grandson, Constantine Phipps, who in 1767 was created Baron Mulgrave, of New Ross in the County of Wexford (Peerage of Ireland). His son was created Baron Mulgrave, of Mulgrave in the County of York (Peerage of Great Britain) in 1794 and Earl of Mulgrave (Peerage of the United Kingdom) in 1812.
