This superb set from the following May finds them on fiery form, as they tackle a range of Grape classics. Originally broadcast on KLMF-FM, the entire broadcast is presented here with background notes and rare images.

This release is a live performance by the reunited 1973-74 lineup of Moby Grape at Ebbets Field in Denver, Colorado on May 8, 1974. In the interest of providing a useful review for Grape Nuts without being too long winded, I will break it down to address the band, the songs, the music, the sound, and the packaging.
The band reunited iconic psychedelic San Francisco era Moby Grape members Peter Lewis, Bob Mosley, and Jerry Miller with guitarist/vocalist Jeff Blackburn and drummer Johnny Craviotto. Original singer/rhythm guitarist Skip Spence was infamously plagued with mental illness, while original singer/drummer Don Stevenson did not participate in this incarnation of the band.
Blackburn was a good choice to substitute for Spence, given his folk rock pedigree, having been in the Bay Area folk rock duo Blackburn & Snow and his association with Neil Young and the Ducks. He also reinstated Moby Grape's legendary triple guitar line, a configuration that the original Grape shared with Young's former band, the Buffalo Springfield.
The set list is a combination of Moby Grape standards from their original incarnation, and newer songs that the band never released on any studio albums. As a result, I'm not sure if the song titles assigned to the newer songs are accurate, or guesses
drawn from the lyrics. The newer songs are all apparently compositions by Lewis, Mosley, and Miller. Moreover, the assigned titles are in some cases similar enough to officially released Grape songs to cause confusion. For instance, an opening medley is listed as "Changes>Falling". "Changes" is not the Miller-Stevenson song from the first Columbia LP, it's a newer song with the lyrics "I feel the changes coming on", while, conversely, the erroneously titled "Falling" is Lewis's "Fall On You" from the first LP. So the set breakdown includes "Fall On You", "Hey Grandma" and "Omaha" from the debut LP, "Murder in my Heart", "Miller's Blues", and "Can't Be So Bad" from Wow!, and "Gypsy Wedding" from the Warner Bros. reunion LP and Mosley's Warner solo LP. The set closing "Goin' Down" is the Don Nix song associated with Jeff Beck. The newer songs are the familiar combination of folk-rock, R&B, and country-western and range in quality, with the stunning "Ain't No Secret", and "Silver Wings" (not to be confused with Lewis's "Silver Wheels") as real standouts. Mosley's "I Feel the Changes" and Lewis's "Get on Up" are also very good entries.
The new group got some bad reviews for ragged performances early in the tour, but this release catches them on a good night. The band no longer had the big amps like at the Fillmore and the Avalon and their sound system was more suited to a club environment, but this is compensated by the playing and singing. The playing is fairly tight and balanced, while the legendary vocal harmonies are spot on. Man, could these guys belt it out! Jerry Miller graces the music with his profuse, jazzy leads (which I like to describe as "electric scat") and his guitar is like a fifth vocalist in the band improvising scat singing. Craviatto backs it all up with a solid and lively beat. Don't be surprised if your eyes mist up when you hear the soaring harmonies on "Ain't No Secret", which could have fit in on the first LP ("People searching, got the whole world upside down!"),
The sound is surprisingly good. It's not perfect, as the vocals are a bit muffled in places and the music slightly lacking in the bass range. However, Miller's leads and the other guitars are clear and balanced in the mix and the sound is certainly better than one might expect from a 45 year old FM broadcast. The packaging is also outstanding, with striking artwork and great period photos of the band members. A booklet also includes a 1974 interview with Peter Lewis, who details the genesis of the reunion and it's subsequent tour. Recommended for Grape Nuts.

If you want a first Moby Grape live album, go for the Sundazed collection that came out about ten years ago. This broadcast from 1974 is of a fairly ragged but occasionally inspired reunion set featuring a different drummer, John Craviotto, who although competent doesn't shape the sound the way Don Stevenson does. It's all a bit "baggy" and loose. For Grape nerds, anoraks and adherents it's fascinating, because it plugs a gap between 1971's 20 Granite Creek and 1978's Live Grape, and also because it contains unreleased songs from an album they were going to make in the UK but never did. The stand-out track, easily, is Gypsy Wedding, which grooves mightily with really nailed-down harmonies. It's a glimpse of what the Granite Creek album might have been with different circumstances of recording.
