For the first time in my memory we left the table with unfinished dishes! We were leaving Beacon soon and could not take leftovers. We had a nice breakfast and no lunch. Having been warned about this place we ordered one less appetizer and one...less main course. The serving for zucchini was typical..six pieces but the caprese came on a platter! Sure, some of this is presentation, but if there was a little less pepper and cheese, no one would have noticed considering the price. The waitress was kind enough to tell us each main dish we were ordering came with a dish of pasta in plain sauce and a side salad and she was kind enough to suggest we have the salad as a course before the main course, She then brought out bowls of salad. To be fair, it’s the one pedestrian dish we had but add the dressings and have it with the great toasted bread with the infused oil that is placed on the table when you sit down and, remembering you are not paying extra for the salad, and one begins to understand this is not the typical farm to table restaurant where included greens are a little side item on the main plate! [Note m: Love these farm to table restaurants by the way, we ate at a couple of 5 star places, but the portion sizes are what they are.] Then the main courses came out. The pasta dish came out in a huge bowl and to be fair you may get the same size in New York, but the delicious Sorrentino type main course, with, again, a BOWL of pasta with sauce (to reiterate, a bowl of salad and a bowl of pasta is included in the price! If the delicious Sorrentino course was a fourth less in size, or so, no one would notice! Oh, a side dish of three tasty meatballs, not two, was only $7.00. I told the manager (owner) he was nuts! He was losing money they could easily earn by just offering human portions, though by enumerating the items he got the joke(whew). The fact is, this restaurant has been in business for over twenty years and the locals come here knowing what to expect. Unfortunately we had to skip dessert but one was carried by us. In a bowl of course! As to prices overall.. just compare to the other highly rated Beacon restaurants, which says it all. This is one of the best meals in quality and particularly in price in the Cold Spring-Beacon area. The biggest problem is that they do not want to open a branch in Brooklyn, the Bronx or Queens. Sigh.More
