Softball Closes Out UAA Schedule With Doubleheader Sweep of Emory to Win Series

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team swept Emory on Sunday to conclude its series with the Eagles at a 3-1 clip. The Bears are now 26-10 with a 15-5 mark in conference play at the conclusion of the UAA slate.
 
Game 1: WashU 5, Emory 3 (continued from Friday, April 26)
The Bears got on the board first, putting a run on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Sydney Schneider hit a one-out single to short and stole second. Natalia Pilpil drew a walk and Kennedy Grippo reached base on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Payton Irwin drew a walk to score Schneider for a 1-0 lead.
 
WashU made it a two-run game in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Taylor Geluck doubled to left center and Grippo single through the right side. Geluck went on to score on a wild pitch to put the Bears up 2-0.
 
Emory tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Page Nellis singled through the right side and Ellie Zerr singled down the right field line. Ella Hoyle singled through the right side to load the bases and with two outs, Kayla Lang doubled to left center to score Nellis and Zerr.
 
After the game was halted in the bottom of the fifth on Friday due to weather, the Bears came out on Sunday morning to resume play and ultimately win the game 5-3.
 
In the bottom of the fifth with one out, Geluck drew a walk and Grippo doubled to left center. Irwin singled to center, scoring Geluck for the 3-2 edge.
 
Emory tied things up in the top of the sixth inning. Nellis led off with a double to left and moved up to third on a Zerr ground out. Hoyle reached on a fielder's choice and Nellis scored on an error to make it a 3-3 game.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Maggie Baumstark was hit by a pitch to lead things off and Reardon put down a bunt single. With two outs, Geluck doubled to right center, scoring both runners for the 5-3 lead.
 
Geluck finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Irwin was 1-for-1 with two RBI and two walks while Grippo went 2-for-4 and Reardon was 2-for-4 with one run scored.
 
First-year Maria Brooks earned the win in the circle to go 9-2, pitching a complete game with five hits, two earned runs, just one walk and seven strikeouts.
 
Game 2: WashU 4, Emory 3
Emory came out to score the first two runs of the game in the top of the first inning. Nellis drew a one-out walk and then stole second. Zerr followed with a single to right field and then stole second and Hoyle singled up the middle to score Nellis. Hoyle stole second and Lang hit a two-out single to right to score Zerr for the two-run lead.
 
The Bears got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Irwin singled up the middle and Kennedy singled through the left. Brooke Capparelli singled up the middle to score Irwin to make it a 2-1 game.
 
The Eagles added another in the top of the third inning. Zerr drew a one-out walk and Hoyle reached on a fielder's choice. Grace Cooper singled up the middle, scoring Zerr for a 3-1 lead.
 
The Bears took a lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as they had a two-out rally to score three runs. Alexa Hanish led off with a single up the middle and Baumstark drew a two-out walk. Reardon singled up the middle, scoring Hanish and Schneider followed with a single up the middle to score both Baumstark and Reardon for a 4-3 lead.
 
Pilpil finished 2-for-3 while Schneider went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Reardon was 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored and Capparelli finished 1-for-3 with one RBI.
 
Hattie Bond earned her fifth win of the season in the circle with four innings of relief with no runs scored and a strikeout.
 
The Bears wrap up the regular-season with a double-header at Chicago on May 9, beginning at 3 p.m.
