These are extensive Asian inspired gardens. Some parts of the gardens are quite formal, beds and beautifully maintained paths. Other areas are a mix of naturalized costal Maine flora with strategically placed Asian, sculptural carvings and water features. Wonderful for strolling and quiet contemplation. The allotted time for your visit (3 hours) is strictly controlled so arriving on time is strongly encouraged.
Wonderful experience. Went with some friends and had a great time looking at all the plantings and the hardscape.
Just the drive up to the parking lot for these gardens is worth the trip. The forest is perfect and the green moss covering the forest floor gives you an otherworld experience. It’s so beautiful. Then the gardens, they are truly exquisite. I am not a gardener, but it made me want to go to the nursery and buy sooo many flowers to try to grow them. The really nice thing is that all the plants are labeled, so if you want to look for specific ones, you know what they are. You do have to make a reservation fairly early as the entrance days and times are limited, however, it does help to give everyone who is there plenty of space to see everything. Five star experience!
This is a private garden that is only open to the public on Thursdays in July, Aug and Sept. You have to reserve a spot on June 1. There is no charge. The garden itself is just wonderful. There is an excellent guide sheet and the flowers are mostly marked so you can tell what you are seeing.
The museum and nature trail are a good bet for city dwellers. No charge for the walk. Small charge for very small museum.
Review must have been posted by mistake. There is no museum or nature trails at the Abby Rockefeller Garden.
Try to go once a year for the sheer beauty and definitely to take friends who are up. Make your reservations on line well in advance. July and August only. Bring your camera.
