I'm a bit confused -- wouldn't almost ALL replacement members have a previous association with the band?

Name bands don't enroll a player out of the blue, like the seasoned session musician who joins the One-ders mid-tour in THAT THING YOU DO.

Frank Zappa's Mother's of Invention: Euclid James Sherwood was in this band, having been in a previous band with Zappa called The Blackouts.

Also, for Bongo Fury, Zappa and Beefheart collaborated, having been at the same school together years earlier.

Also replaced Glen Cornick with Jeffrey Hammond(-Hammond) from the same John Evan band. Plus of course added John Evan to the band for good measure!

I don’t think Metallica, for example, had any association with Jason Newstead before he joined. He was one of many they ‘interviewed’.

Tim Finn joining Crowded House after being in Split Enz with his brother Neil and drummer Paul Hester.

oops. Tim didn’t replace anyone, was merely added on so maybe not in keeping with OPs thread intention.

Bassist Pete Quaife of The Kinks broke his leg in June 1966. The Kinks hired John Dalton as a temporary replacement until November 1966, when Quaife returned.

A few years later, in 1969, Quaife quit the band for good---and was replaced permanently by John Dalton.

Greg Lake left the mighty CRIMS after the first album tour in the USA (1969) to go with ELP. He is singing on this album.

    Excerpt from wiki

"Ian McDonald and Michael Giles left the band following their first American tour in 1970. Around the same time Greg Lake was approached by Keith Emerson to join what would become Emerson, Lake & Palmer. With the absence of McDonald, Robert Fripp took on part of the keyboard-playing role in addition to guitar. As Lake's position in the band was unclear, then-unknown Elton John was booked to sing on the recording sessions for In the Wake of Poseidon, but Fripp had second thoughts and cancelled the booking.[1][2] Lake ultimately decided to leave, but agreed to sing on the recordings, negotiating to receive King Crimson's PA equipment as payment. He ended up singing on all but one of the album's vocal tracks. The exception was "Cadence and Cascade", which featured a guest vocal by Fripp's old schoolfriend and teenage bandmate Gordon Haskell. An early mix of the song with Lake singing a guide vocal was later unearthed and featured on the DGM site as a download.[3] Other musicians involved with the album were Michael Giles and his brother Peter Giles on drums and bass respectively, Mel Collins (formerly of the band Circus) on saxophones and flute, and Keith Tippett on piano."

Does Procol Harum winding up with the line up of the Paramounts for Home count?

& did I read that the post Forever Changes Love was Arthur Lee bringing players he'd played with pre Love again.
Billy Preston had played with Johnny Echols previous band btw.

Everlasting First had Lee bring back a guitarist called Jimi Hendrix that he'd employed 5 years earlier.

Nick Cave about to do a tour in 1985 finds himself without a guitarist. winds up bringing in a guy called Rowland s Howard who Mick Harvey had spent several years in a band with. didn't give him the time to learn the material though
Cave himself had been in that previous band.
