Andriy Lunin Saves Two Manchester City Penalties As Real Madrid Win Champions League Shootout to Reach Semi-Finals

Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin was the Real Madrid hero on Wednesday night after saving two penalties in a shootout victory over Manchester City.

Lunin kept out spot-kicks from Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic as Madrid beat City 4-3 in the shootout after their UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg had finished 1-1, 4-4 on aggregate, after 120 minutes of play in Manchester.

Madrid will now face Bayern Munich in the semi-finals. Bayern beat Arsenal 1-0, 3-2 on aggregate, in Wednesday's other game.

City bossed the game in terms of possession (67%) and chances as they registered 33 shots - 25 more than Madrid.

But the Spanish side scored first when Rodrygo fired past Ederson from six yards inside the opening quarter-hour.

Erling Haaland struck the crossbar as City threatened to hit back almost immediately but it took the reigning champions until the 76th minute to draw level.

The equalizer came courtesy of Kevin De Bruyne, who placed a shot past Lunin from close range after Antonio Rudiger had failed to deal with a low cross from Jeremy Doku.

Lunin had racked up eight saves before the game went to a penalty shootout, while Ederson had stopped just two shots at the other end.

But it was Ederson who made the first penalty save by getting down low to deny Luka Modric.

Lunin then stood up straight to block a central effort by Silva before Kovacic also hit his shot too close to the Ukrainian.

Julian Alvarez, Phil Foden and City keeper Ederson all found the net from 12 yards but it was not enough as Jude Bellingham, Lucas Vazquez, Nacho and Rudiger fired Madrid to shootout success.

De Bruyne and Haaland had both been substituted off before the game went to spot-kicks.
