New Hanover High School Reviews
Rating 3.78 out of 5 219 reviews
Personally, being a new student with a Hispanic family, at first it was difficult for me to integrate into school, but over time I got along better and met classmates and teachers willing to help me and explain my doubts. I want to include that most of the teachers and administrators made me learn things and supported me in my studies and learning goals. Something that I would like to change would be that as a community there was more inclusion towards people who are different, more than anything that students had more respect for each other and did not discriminate.
The Lyceum Academy is an intense mode of schooling in which select students within New Hanover county are given an opportunity to take all core AP classes in a college simulating classroom at New Hanover. I believe this program is the best opportunity I participated in and is offered at my high school. It's a good chance statistically for my school to grow in academic achievements as it draws in high achieving students. Although this is extremely beneficial it results in an extremely sheltered environment. Due to Lyceum classes being separate from the main high school, the safety issues such as lack of metal detectors and open campus makes security issues more apparent; Issues in the past in which put me and fellow students in danger when our lack of metal detectors resulted in injury and breach of security. Although I believe my school has great academic opportunities I would wish to see an increase in security in order to promote more comfort within the high school environment.
I started at New Hanover this fall as senior. Immediately I noticed the lack of care for transfer students and horrible technology problems. Most teachers will not email you back, and if they do it’s to refer you to someone else. Another huge problem is the overall building. It’s very dirty and lacks on regular cleanings. There is also a very big problem with safety. Many times we have gone into a lockdown because of a gun being on campus or someone threating the school.
