Margaret Court was the defending champion, but did not compete this year.
Olga Morozova won the title by defeating Billie Jean King 7–6(5–2), 6–1 in the final. Morozova had to hand the prize money over to the Soviet Tennis Federation.[1]
^Friedman, Charles (30 April 1974). "Advantage Miss Morozova, Mr. Tanner, Mr. Smith". The New York Times. Retrieved 19 February 2024. Miss Morozova also won $10,000 as she surprisingly dominated Mrs. Billie Jean King at the Palestra in Philadelphia for her first major victory in a final in this country. Did she go on a spending binge? Hardly. The check went straight to the Soviet tennis federation.
