Welcome to the Website of the Consular Section of the Austrian Embassy Washington!
This website provides information on all consular matters within the Embassy's jurisdiction.
Visiting the White House
The White House website states that foreign nationals interested in touring the White House should contact their Embassy to arrange a tour. Unfortunately, the Embassy cannot arrange White House tours for tourist purposes, as they are subject to very high security requirements by the U.S. Department of State. Therefore please refrain from sending requests for a tour to the Embassy. Thank you for your understanding. For further information please see our website.
Warning: Fraud attempts using alleged e-mail addresses of Austrian diplomatic missions
We warn against spoof e-mails that are currently circulating in the name of Austrian embassies or foreign trade centers. E-mails with the domain name bmeia.OR.at should be ignored or deleted immediately. E-mails from Austrian representations (embassies, consulates general, cultural forums, permanent representations) are exclusively from the domain name @bmeia.gv.at. Additionally, in the United States, the Austrian Press and Information Service also uses the domain @austria.org.
Austrian citizenship for descendants of victims of National Socialism
On 19 September 2019 the Parliament of Austria unanimously approved an amendment to the Austrian law on citizenship in line with Austria’s ongoing endeavour for reconciliation with all those who suffered under the totalitarian Nazi-regime in Austria.
Victims of Nazi-persecution in Austria can lodge a claim pursuant to Art. 58c (1) of the Austrian Citizenship Act. The necessary form is available at the Consulate.
Descendants can lodge a claim pursuant to Art. 58c (1a). The Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs has developed an online questionnaire in consultation with MA 35. This should give you an orientation as to which documents must be submitted in your case, facilitate a fast procedure after you have filed your declaration and help you avoid an extensive search for documents that are not required in your case.
