      Critics Consensus

Road House updates a cult classic for a new generation, happily replicating the original's emphasis on cheesy brawn over narrative brains.

      Audience Says

Road House can sometimes be so bad it's good, but more often, the uneven acting and ridiculous story are just disappointing.

Rafer Guzman Newsday The gonzo magic of the 1989 original is gone, but there’s enough bone-breaking action here to satisfy B-movie aficionados. Rated: 3/4 Apr 8, 2024 Full Review Philip De Semlyen Time Out The combination of Gyllenhaal’s easy charm, some Florida sunshine and at least one fight scene for the ages make this Road House worth stopping by. Just try to grab a seat in a quiet corner. Rated: 3/5 Apr 1, 2024 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) More dynamic and less strange than the original, this remake is a hell of a good time as long as you don’t think too hard about any of it. But it probably won’t reach cult status, it’s neither excellent nor terrible enough for that. Rated: 3/5 Apr 1, 2024 Full Review Sarah Marrs Lainey Gossip Just a real hootin’, hollerin’, bar-stompin’ good time. May 29, 2024 Full Review James Marsh South China Morning Post Gone is the throat-ripping and the simmering homoeroticism that pulsated throughout the original, replaced by a competent if uninspired combination of mixed martial arts and conventional bar brawling. Rated: 2/5 May 9, 2024 Full Review Dan Buffa Ramble On With Buffa (Substack) Swayze won’t roll in his grave, but he can rest soundly knowing this one pales in comparison to his original gem. Sometimes it’s best to leave it alone, even if the world of film received a gift wrapped bad guy in McGregor. Rated: C May 7, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Casey D The lead isn’t charming and Connor macgregor is not only a terrible actor but based on the many accusations against him, a terrible person. The script is clunky and not a laughable line in the whole film. The fights are all sped up to make the action more “real” but is ultimately just hard to watch. There’s no way this should have a higher rating than the original. Horrible film Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/28/24 Full Review Mindy N This movie had some good points but it was generally cheesy. I just can't buy Jake Gyllienthal in the role. Disappointing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/26/24 Full Review Audience Member What a supreme waste of time! So bad I couldn’t stop watching it just to see how bad it could get. It didn’t disappoint. It sunk down to rock bottom then continued to dig. How did Jake sign up for this? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/26/24 Full Review Rory H Connor McGregor is that man! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/26/24 Full Review LPG 1 Disaster movie with weak plot, terrible acting and unrealistic story, bad CGI . The only thing likeable about this movie is the beach front Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/25/24 Full Review Kenneth Yaw A I went into this movie with a blank mind and with no expectation as to how it will turned up and I must say I really did enjoy this. Jake Gyllenhaal's portrayal is exceptional, bringing depth to his character in a movie that excels in its fighting sequences. The plot, while straightforward, is engaging, and the film shines in its character development. Kudos to the stunt team and choreographers whose skillful work elevates the action, creating thrilling and visually stunning fight scenes. This film is a testament to the art of action cinema and comes highly recommended for its entertainment value and the sheer spectacle of its choreography.
