Hello all, we will be visiting Kyoto end of October for one week. We are a family of 4 (two adults and two 7years old kids). I have seen many good comments about both hotel so I am a little torn which one to choose. We would like to have easy access to restaurants and things to do.

426 helpful votes Cross Hotel is closer to more happening areas, and also slightly closer to a subway and Keihan Line. It offers many different size rooms. I suspect you need a large room to accommodate your family. I stayed in their 47m2 room and it was large and nice facing Kiyamachi and Takae River. They also have smaller rooms that face a back alley and an ugly parking lot, so you need to be careful. The location is almost perfect but it's not a luxury hotel-the furniture feels cheap and towels are small and thin. If you're not bothered by things like that, it's a great hotel.
The Chapter has small rooms unless you book a suite. Their smallest room is only 21m2 which is too small for a family of 4. Their regular large room is only 30m2, too.
As you're a family of 4, look all rooms on their website and check the room sizes and decide.

Even though I am very curious about the Cross we are leaning towards The Chapter. The plan is to book 2 “connected rooms” and this way have 2 bathrooms.
I saw you comments about Solaria and Aoi. Aoi is not allowing booking yet. I found it really nice, some rooms have two toilets (which make it very convenient) however it would cost double of The Chapter.
I also got interested at Gion Elite Terrasse and the Hyatt place. Any thoughts on those?

426 helpful votes The Hyatt Place is near the Imperial Palace and Nijo Castel but far from everything else. Not a convenient location.
The Gion Elite Terrasse looks like a new luxurious property in a quiet area of Gion. There are lots of nice attractions within walking distance but it's not convenient for getting to the rest of Kyoto from there. Also, you'll have to walk quite a bit or take a taxi to get to restaurants/shops.
I think 2 connecting rooms in the Chapter are the best match for your needs.
My husband and I stayed at the Cross Hotel and loved it. It was in such a wonderful location and so close to many restaurants as well as the train stations. We didn’t have children with us but there were a few families when we were there.
It’s always a tough decision but you definitely wouldn’t go wrong there.

Just wanted to use this thread to get tips / suggestions of restaurants in Kyoto so I can start making reservations where is required.
We love shabu shabu, sukiyaki, yakitori, sushi ( normally omakase if only my husband and I, but with the children it might be a bit difficult), etc. We don’t like Kaiseki (sorry for the blasphemy!).. we have tried few times and never was our cup of tea.
Anyway we love eating 😊 and last time (many years ago pre kids) I remember having delicious food in Kyoto.

426 helpful votes You'll get more responses if you start a new thread regarding restaurants in Kyoto. I have dinner in Izakayas almost 100% of the time and the places I go usually offer no English menus, so they are not for you. I hope others can help.
