Damascus is a great school for athletics. There are so many sports that are offered where kids are able to expressed their athletic abilities. They have amazing teachers and faculties which help facilitate academics and allow for endless learning opportunities. There is a bit of a lack of diversity and can take a bit to feel comfortable in the atmosphere.
I have a deep history in Damascus High School. My father, Aunt, Grandfather, and other relatives have all gone to Damascus High School. The memories I have with the school start from a young age when I would go and watch my siblings and cousins play or perform. I have met amazing friends and our community has always been tight-knit and close. The culture and community around Damascus are by far the best part. However, it is sad to see how the school is treated by the county. This school has needed upgrading and remodeling since I was born, yet we are still neglected. The county has failed us in many ways, including upgrades, education, funding, and respect. Although it has gotten better over the recent years. Overall, even though the flaws, these years have been some of the best I could imagine.
As a senior in the class of 2024 at Damascus High School, I have had the unique opportunity to be a part of this school during the 2020-2021 COVID school year. The pressures, uncertainty, and questions of the COVID school year cracked down on and exposed different strengths and weaknesses of Damascus. I have known a lot of teachers, administrators, parents, and students who have been frustrated by the leadership, or lack thereof, shown during the 2020-2021 school year. I felt like there was a regression of effort and engagement from students and teachers. I have seen school grading systems, attendance systems, and extracurricular activities plummet down hill. However, I have also seen a diverse community of students, teachers, and administrators who have tried to rebuild the character of Damascus High School. My principal, Kevin Yates, has gone lengths to see a spark in our school. I believe that Mr. Yates has saved a large part of our school through his positivity and enthusiasm.
