Great little trattoria - obviously packed with locals in the know. Phenomenal seafood linguine - so good we had to come back and have it again. Lovely staff, cosy and comfortable venue and prices reasonable. Loved it.

This is our favorite place in New York and we come every time we are in town. The Caesar Salad is the best ever, the Caprese Salad is amazing, Carbonera perfect, fettuccini with mushrooms to die for and the orecchietti worth wading through a snow storm for. The staff, including Dan and Alyssa, are wonderful and make you feel like part of the family.

We were a party of 8. We had an amazing meal. The appetizers were very flavorful. We started with stuffed mushrooms, asparagus, Burrata and a hot mista. All very good. The Caesar salad also excellent. The pasta dishes were equally outstanding. This is authentic Italian cuisine ! No out there ingredients or trying too hard cuisine. Our waiter equally excellent! We will return. Loved it!

If you want to experience great authentic New York Italian cuisine in an informal setting this is the place to go. As for some of the negative reviews: it's clear that whoever wrote them had no idea of what a trattoria is. If you want haut cuisine in a fancy pretentious setting, with groveling waiters go someplace else. That's not what Monte's is. The food at Monte's is absolutely delicious. My wife and I and our son started off with baby artichokes oreganata, white mushrooms stuffed with vegetable puree, and eggplant rollatini. Each was terrific: (we all sampled all three), flavorful without being overpowering or drowned in sauce or oil. (My wife's term was "feather light"). Then onto the main course, three dishes with house made pasta: Cannelloni stuffed with veal, spinach, and ricotta, Fettuccini Verdi Bolognese, and Manicotti. Each was brilliant. Again, tasty, without being over-seasoned or drowned in oil. Longtime chef Mosconi has been there for long enough that he doesn't need to make a "statement". The meal was accompanied by a good Rosso di Montalcino (our waiter joked with us about the name of the producer "Paradisone") which paired well with the food, from the extensive wine list with selections at a variety of price points. For desert my wife and I ordered the Tiramisu, which we have had on previous visits and is without question the best Tiramisu we've ever had. Our son ordered Cannoli. Anybody can prepare a cannoli with a sweet and yummy filling. The trick is in the pastry. This one was not only crisp (how many soggy cannolis have we all had?) but also had its own delightful flavor. All of this for a very reasonable price. As far as the "atmosphere": again if you're looking for a trendy or pretentious setting this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for a warm, authentically Italian setting surrounded by pictures of Italy and Italian celebrities who've dined here, and veteran waiters who are friendly and knowledgeable and not phony, this is the place, Yes, the tables are close together, but not obnoxiously so. The noise level is fine, we had no difficulty conversing in our normal voices. We didn't order any of the non-pasta mains, but I have no doubt they too are excellent if what we were served is any indication. Ignore the gripers! Take it from me -- I live in Long Island where there are plenty of good Italian restaurants -- this place is special. We've been there on a number of occasions over the years, and it hasn't lost anything. After you're done, you step out onto MacDougal street in the heart of the West Village feeling full and satisfied, but not stuffed. What's not to like? p.s. I am not affiliated with this place in any way -- I'm 100% "civilian".

The food was not high quality and the service was lackluster. We left after dinner and got pizza. Never again. With all the choices in NYC, particularly in this area, this place should be avoided at all costs.

The most charming and delicious Italian restaurant in NYC. The staff, including Chef were friendly and attentive. Artichoke Heart and Bolognese were outstanding!

Great Italian food. Busy, crowded, tiny tables, a classic! Staff old school. House wine is good, half or full carafe. I have enjoyed dining at Monte's for 25 years.

Not sure if it’s because I rarely eat Italian food or of this place is just heaven on earth, but you can taste the TLC that goes into preparing the food at this quaint restaurant. We visited on a recent food tour and sampled the pasta bolognese. Wow. What a difference from store-bought pasta. Melted in our mouths. An explosion of flavor in every bite. Definitely would come here for a meal on a future visit. Momma Mia

The food was authentic and lovely, I had a gluten free diet which was accommodated to an acceptable level. However, the reservation system was very bizarre, we and many other people who had reserved were waiting outdoors for up to 40 mins for our reserved tables- not very punctual especially if you’re hungry. The restaurant was busy and had a fun vibe!

having been here before and rating it very highly, we were very disappointed this current visit --- waiter never told us 'specials', tables were too close to each other so we heard other table's conversations, dishes were brought out one-at-a-time to each of the 4 of us, too much time elapsed between appetizer and entree, and then entree with dessert.

Visited this charming and authentic Italian restaurant last Monday to celebrate my birthday. We were served by Daniel, who was fantastic, very knowledgeable, friendly, and yet very professional, too. He recommended the mushrooms as a shared started, which were delicious, and suggested the lamb shank for my main course and the lasagne gor my partner. Neither of us was disappointed. The food was amazing. Good wholesome and satisfying. The pannacotta for desert was to die for. All in all, this place was the best culinary experience we had during our week in this great city. Montes was recommended to us by our travel agent, who says he just stumbled across it by accident some years ago. Macdougal Street is busy and vibrant and is full of other premises you would probably not visit. Please don't let this put you off, Montes is definitely a must do when in NYC. It is completely authentic Italian and a 'diamond in the rough'. We will most definitely use it again. Prices are more than reasonable given the standard of the food and overall dining experience. Thank you to all at Montes, especially Daniel.

I have been dining at Monte's for over 25 years. The food has always been great. This visi the service should have been better. I had to ask for bread, twice. Bread should be automatic. And I had to ask for a spoon, twice. By the time the bread arrived, I was halfway done with my entree. Too late. I will go back, but with a close eye on the server.

Food was delicious, Service was just right. Staff knowledgeable and friendly. Come in,relax . Get a couple of sides (baby artichokes are a must) , a nice red (let Daniel make a suggestion) share the pastas and the mains ,topped off by limoncellos and dessert. If that isn't a wonderful dining experience for you then go back to Tallahassee for unlimited soup and salad at the O. Garden. You are out of your element.

Very authentic Italian New York restaurant in the heart of Greenwich Village. Not the best meal we had during our stay but very nice and also well priced. Service was excellent, atmosphere great and deserts outstanding. Tiramisu was amazing.
