The University of London Officers’ Training Corps (ULOTC) is an Army Reserve unit that recruits from universities across Greater London, Kent and the South East.
ULOTC recruits from higher education institutions across the region, not just London. We have two locations, our main site at Handel Street in Bloomsbury, London and a detachment at Leros Barracks in Canterbury. You can choose whichever location suits you best.
You are under no obligation to join the Regular Army or Army Reserve after your time with the UOTC finishes.
A STUDENT LIFE LESS ORDINARY
ULOTC offers a unique experience to university students looking to challenge and develop themselves as well as making life-long friends.
You will receive internationally recognised military and leadership training along with the opportunity to immerse yourself in a variety of sports and adventurous training activities. The training is designed to fit around your academic commitments.
Training at ULOTC consists of weekly training nights and monthly training weekends, during term time. The weekly training nights are on Tuesdays (7-9pm). During the 2023/24 programme there are six training weekends, two in the Winter Term and four in the Spring Term. Officer Cadets are encouraged to attend as much of this training as possible, however academic studies remain the priority.
The training you carry out each year culminates in an Annual Camp, taking place over two weeks in June-July. Our annual camps take place in the UK or overseas and are the highlight of the training year.
You are also paid for your time. Students in their first year are paid £45.77 for each day they train, rising to £54.18 per day for those in their second and third year of training.
Whilst some of our students go on to serve in the Regular Army or Army Reserve, students at ULOTC are under no obligation to continue their service after their studies have finished. You can leave the unit at any time and are not expected to join the Army after university.

SPORT AND ADVENTUROUS TRAINING
The ULOTC fields competitive teams in many disciplines such as Rugby, Hockey, Netball, Football and others. Our Officer Cadets lead each sport, and can create teams for new sports if there is interest. We saw this earlier in the year when the Brazilian Ju-Jitsu team was formed.
As an Officer Cadet you will be supported to try new sports and even compete at the highest levels in your chosen field. We have Officer Cadets and Staff who represent the Army in their sporting fields.
Adventurous training features strongly throughout the ULOTC year and is one of the many ways we help you to develop leadership skills while enabling you to test and stretch your limits.
The unit takes part in a wide range of adventurous pursuits. Each year ULOTC runs a week-long alpine skiing expedition. Sailing also features frequently on the calendar. Over the past year ULOTC Officer Cadets have sailed to Iceland, France, the Channel Islands and Scotland on longer expeditions, alongside weekend expeditions around the Isle of Wight and south coast. Our Officer Cadets also get the opportunity to take part in activity as widely ranging as kayaking, rock-climbing, parachuting and others.
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
With a fantastic social calendar, the ULOTC has everything you need to enhance and complement your time at university. Each year the unit hosts a regimental dinner as well as a cocktail party, both of which are black-tie events. Alongside these formal occasions there are also more casual costume events for Christmas and Halloween.

After experiencing the camaraderie and wealth of opportunity that being part of the UOTC brings, you might decide a career in the Army is for you. There are numerous Army Officer bursaries available to support you through university, helping you to reach your full potential.
You could be eligible for a bursary of up to £25,000 or £75,000 depending on the course you are studying.
