While Iowa has a storied history of famous athletes and coaches, the Hawkeyes’ list of famous alumni isn’t solely relegated to the gridiron or the hardwood.

Gene Wilder
Best known for: Actor, writer, filmmaker.
Gene Wilder graduated from Iowa in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts in communication and theatre arts. While his filmography credits are larger than one movie, Wilder is best known for his portrayal of Willy Wonka in the 1971 classic “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.”
Ashton Kutcher
Best known for: Actor
Ashton Kutcher rose to stardom as Michael Kelso on the FOX sitcom “That 70’s Show.” In addition to plenty of other film credits, Kutcher had leading roles in the movies “Dude, Where’s My Car?” and “The Butterfly Effect.” He enrolled at the University of Iowa in August of 1996. Kutcher’s planned major at Iowa was biochemical engineering.
Jake Johnson
Best known for: Actor, comedian
While at the University of Iowa, Jake Johnson wrote a play that earned him admission into the dramatic writing department at NYU’s Tisch School of Arts. Johnson is best known for his portrayal of Nick Miller on FOX’s award-winning sitcom “New Girl.”
Tennessee Williams

Best known for: Playwright
Tennessee Williams graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1938. Williams became famous thanks to the success of his play “The Glass Menagerie.” He also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his plays “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”
Jean Seberg
Best known for: Actress
Jean Seberg was the lead actress in Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 French crime drama film “Breathless.” The role established Seberg as an icon in French new wave cinema.
Tom Brokaw
Best known for: Broadcast journalist
Tom Brokaw was the anchor of NBC’s “Nightly News” from 1982 to 2004. Though he actually graduated from the University of South Dakota, Brokaw began his college studies at the University of Iowa. He was awarded an honor doctorate from Iowa in 2010.
Tom Arnold
Best known for: Actor, comedian, television host
Tom Arnold studied business administration and and writing at the University of Iowa. Arnold rose to stardom as Arnie Thomas on the hit ABC sitcom “Roseanne.” He also was one of the hosts on “The Best Damn Sports Show Period.”
Flannery O'Connor
Best known for: Novelist
Flannery O’Connor was admitted into the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa in 1946. She is well known for her short stories. O’Connor published two books of her short stories: “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” and “Everything That Rises Must Converge.”
Brandon Routh
Best known for: Actor
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman! Brandon Routh starred as Superman in the 2006 film “Superman Returns.” Routh attended the University of Iowa for a year.
Al Jarreau
Best known for: Singer and musician
Al Jarreau has won seven Grammy Awards during his career. His 1981 album “Breakin’ Away” won Jarreau the 1982 Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Jarreau earned a master’s degree in vocational rehabilitation from the University of Iowa in 1964.
Terry O'Quinn
Best known for: Actor
Terry O’Quinn starred as John Locke on the ABC series “Lost.” He also had the title role in the horror films titled “The Stepfather” and “Stepfather II.”
Albert Bandura
Best known for: Psychologist, professor
Albert Bandura is known for his work as a professor and his contributions to the field of education and psychology. He is best known as the originator of social learning theory.
Colin Egglesfield
Best known for: Actor
Colin Egglesfield is known for his role as Josh Madden in the long-running soap opera “All My Children.” He also starred as Auggie Kirkpatrick on the The CW series “Melrose Place.”
John Irving
Best known for: Novelist, screenwriter
The international success of “The World According to Garp” meant critical and popular acclaim for John Irving in 1978. Five of Irving’s novels have been adapted into films, including “The Cider House Rules.” Irving won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for his script of “The Cider House Rules.”
D.B. Weiss
Best known for: Television writer, director and producer
D.B. Weiss is one of the co-creators of HBO’s megahit “Game of Thrones.” The adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s series of books “A Song of Ice and Fire” turned into one of the most popular television shows in recent memory.
Paul Rust
Best known for: Actor, comedian
Paul Rust graduated from the University of Iowa in 2004. Rust starred in the 2009 film “I Love You, Beth Cooper” alongside Hayden Panettiere. He also starred in the Netflix series “Love.”
Diablo Cody
Best known for: Screenwriter, producer
Cody Diablo graduated from the University of Iowa in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts in media. She received critical acclaim for her screenwriting debut film, “Juno.” The 2007 movie won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Recently, Cody won a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for “Jagged Little Pill.”
David Eigenberg
Best known for: Actor
David Eigenberg is best known for his role as Steve Brady on HBO’s “Sex and the City.” He also starred on the NBC series “Chicago Fire.”
Ann Patchett
Best known for: Author
Ann Patchett received the 2002 PEN/Faulkner Award and the Orange Prize for Fiction for her novel “Bel Canto.” One of her other novels, “The Dutch House,” was a finalist for the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

James Tolkan is best remembered as Mr. Strickland in the “Back to the Future” trilogy.
