When To Do A Test Shoot For Your Film

I know you're probably chomping at the bit to get filming, but have you considered doing a test shoot first? Test shoots can be a crucial part of filmmaking, but you've got to know when to do them, so here are a few tips on when you might want to do a test shoot.

First, you might want to do a test if you, if you have a particularly difficult shot to achieve such as super slow motion, or if you have advanced camera movement, you want to test. You'll also want to do one when CGI or special effects work is needed. Shooting reference footage can help your special effects artists test out their work ahead of time to make sure you capture exactly what they need for the actual shot. This also helps ensure that the director, cinematographer, and the special effects artists are all on the same page, as far as what the final shot should look like. Thus avoiding any surprises in post.

Test shots can also be helpful when you want to test framing for storyboarding. If you have access to the actual location ahead of time, then doing some test shots in the space can really help open up your shot choice possibilities, and spark new creative ideas. And finally test shoots can help when you want to test framing at the location. Maybe you've already done your storyboarding, but you're not sure if your shot selection will visually work at the location. Doing a few quick test shots can help you make sure your vision will work in the space.

The budget doesn't always allow for test shooting, and it might not always be necessary, but doing test shoots can help smooth things out on the actual shoot day, help you work out kinks, and test ideas.
