      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Joy is anchored by a strong performance from Jennifer Lawrence, although director David O. Russell's uncertain approach to its fascinating fact-based tale only sporadically sparks bursts of the titular emotion.

Manuel Betancourt Bitch Media Joy pursues a number of ill-fitting narrative detours that detract from the fascinating story that should be at the core of the movie. While I was rooting for the film-and for Joy herself - ultimately it felt like the film missed a key opportunity. Feb 9, 2021 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint This optimistic, often amusing story is a Lawrence show all the way as she flies the flag for feminism, entrepreneurship and family without missing a beat. Aug 15, 2019 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Oh Mr. Russell, you're nothing if not predictable. Rated: C- Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Josh Slater-Williams Vague Visages A little bit of that magic spread somewhere on Joy's set, since its maestros successfully manage to sell you on a film that's ostensibly about the creation of a cleaning product... Nov 14, 2023 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Equal to the scattered mess of personalities within this central family, the film itself doesn't know what it wants to be and that's a large flaw. Rated: 3/5 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review There's much to admire about Joy, beginning with another helluva performance by Lawrence. donnie m Jennifer Lawrence did a really good job in this movie and 'kicked ass' at the end! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review alan g Just a long dull commercial for joy mangano. Lead actress tries but just an infomercial. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review Rory M There is a some good movie in here with decent performances, most notably Jennifer Lawrence in act 1, but there are some weird directing choices and the pacing is abysmal. It's a very just watched it because it was on TV movie even though I chosed to watch it Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/18/24 Full Review Aleksei C Excellent acting by the main character! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/16/23 Full Review Alec B Despite the poor attempts at surrealism and characters that constantly veer towards cartoonish rather than anything realistic the movie's weirdly watchable . . . it's a failure, but an interesting one. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/14/23 Full Review Ben N I enjoyed this, but it was missing something to bring me back again in the future.
