Touring in support of the _Eat It_ double LP release, which was issued in April of 1973, Humble Pie is captured kickin' ass in San Francisco throughout _Hot 'n' Nasty - Rockin' the Winterland_. Pie mighty-mite vocalist/guitarist Steve Marriott notes during the hot live set that the group came to Frisco to play bitchin' rock. That is no fucking lie, as Humble Pie storm from the Winterland stage on May 6th, 1973, with a stone cold set of amped-up blues-based rock and get-down boogie.
While Led Zeppelin ruled the world during the early '70s, Humble Pie forged their own slice of rock 'n' roll notoriety via their raw recordings and sweat-soaked live performances. Marriott was the driving force in Humble Pie. Steve may have been small in stature, but he packed a huge, beating rock 'n' roll heart, and his soulful pipes added another dimension to Humble Pie's arrangements.
Guitarist Peter Frampton was out of the picture by '72, but his replacement, Dave "Clem" Clempson, added a harder edge with his aggressive six-string work. In addition, Humble Pie is backed by The Blackberries on _Hot 'n' Nasty - Rockin' the Winterland_. The trio of Venetta Field, Clydie King and Billie Barnum added an R&B dimension to the Pie's performances, as evident throughout "I Believe to My Soul".
Opening strong with the frenzied "Up Your Sleeves", a ripping set starter, Humble Pie then drop into the Ida Cox penned "4-Day Creep", followed by the oft-covered "C'mon Everybody". Five of the eleven songs from the energized _Winterland_ set, which includes Eddie Cochran's "C'mon Everybody", are pulled from the English group's _Smokin'_ album, which was Clempson's debut with Humble Pie.
The _Hot 'n' Nasty - Rockin' the Winterland_ collection of cuts is also available as a _King Biscuit Flour Hour_ concert recording. The ballsy live performance adds a Pie version of the Rolling Stones "Honky Tonk Woman" which is accented by the Blackberries backing vocals. Other hot tracks from the inspired live set include the raucous "30 Days in the Hole", the loose remake of "Hallelujah, I Love You So", and the riff-infested "I Don't Need No Doctor". A seven-minute-plus romp through "Hot n' Nasty" closes out the searing gig.
