Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.
It was Labor Day weekend I was seventeen
I bought a Coke and some gasoline
And I drove out to the County Fair
When I saw her for the first time
She was standing there in the ticket line
And it all started right then and there
Oh a sailor's sky made a perfect sunset
And that's a day I'll never forget
I had a barbecue stain on my white t-shirt
She was killing me in that mini-skirt
Skippin' rocks on the river by the railroad tracks
She had a sun tan line and red lipstick
I worked so hard for that first kiss
And a heart don't forget something like that
Well it was five years later on a south-bound plane
I was headed down to New Orleans
To meet some friends of mine for the Mardi Gras
When I heard a voice from the past
Coming from a few rows back
and when I looked I couldn't believe just what I saw
She said, "I bet you don't remember me"
And I said, "Only every other memory"
I had a barbecue stain on my white t-shirt
You were killing me in that mini-skirt
Skippin' rocks on the river by the railroad tracks
You had a sun tan line and red lipstick
I worked so hard for that first kiss
And a heart don't forget something like that
Like an old photograph
Time can make a feeling fade
But the memory of the first love
Never fades away
I had a barbecue stain on my white t-shirt
She was killing me in that mini-skirt
Skippin' rocks on the river by the railroad tracks
She had a sun tan line and red lipstick
I worked so hard for that first kiss
And a heart don't forget, no a heart don't forget
I said a heart don't forget something like that
Oh, not something like that
I bought a Coke and some gasoline
And I drove out to the County Fair
When I saw her for the first time
She was standing there in the ticket line
And it all started right then and there
Oh a sailor's sky made a perfect sunset

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
Blue
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
this song is def bout a girl he met one day and he was positive it was love @ first, and i believe it was his first love and thats y he remebers her later in life, because she made such an impression in his life, and he obviosuly remebers the good old days chillin w/ her and how wonderful she looked, i think hes tryin to tell the listener that ur heart doesn't forget true love even if ur mind wants to, because love conquers all
sigh this was one of the first Tim McGraw songs I ever heard...way back in 6th grade. I remember then my friend and I used to make fun of it, b/c it was (gasp GOD FORBID!) country music, but secretly I liked it. I didn't want to tell her this or she would be making fun of me instead of the song. 5 years later and Im going to a Tim McGraw concert in less than a month! mwa ha ha.
oh, if this song isnt just perfect. i met my first love at the county fair. this song makes me think of him and i always cry a little when i hear it. i can never forget him. love really does conquer all...
this is what makes me love country music.
i agree, this is why i love country music as well. growing up in iowa, i can appreciate this. we would drive around in big-hick trucks with the windows down, blaring songs like this one. it was amazing.
I love this song. some people think its called "bbq stain". dunno why. But,i love tim mcgraw. i agree with muntimus. :D
haha yea im in 8th grade and i listen to mostly rap and hip hop but country to and my friends give me so much shit for it but its what friends are for; but this song kicks ass
Hmmm..This song makes me feel nostalgic. It's amazing how we never forget that "one love."
No matter how much we'd like our minds to forget that one person, our heart never seems to give us that ability to forget. :) I kind of like it....
This is one of his best in my opinion. It reminds me of when I was a kid, driving out to my Dad's in the country and he'd play Tim McGraw and teach my little sisters and I the words to all his songs. This song is so sweet I think pretty much everyone rremembers 17 as being one of the best years of your life and the innocence of first love. That was only last year for me but I still miss it. Can't wait to see Tim later this year when he comes Down Under to Oz!! Hooray!!!
Like an old photograph, time can make a feeling fade But the memory of the first love never fades away
Probably the best lyrics of that song. Now in the song, it seems that he's remembering a past love fondly, and while my ex was basically a b****, that feeling of love itself I had for her is what makes me happy when I think about that time in my life.
