Stayed here for two nights in mid August during a short trip,to Bourgogne. Beautiful setting in extensive grounds which gives a great sense of calm and space in a reasonably busy period.

The main building, our junior sweet, built above the crypt of the church, the service, the quality of the food were all excellent. They took the necessary precautions regarding Covid, hand-sanitizers, Masks when moving around the building, etc.

The room was beautiful. The medieval walls cooled things down and a fan helped further. A super bed, original lighting, including on light made out of an antique trumpet and a great open shower.

We ate one night in the ‘gastro’ restaurant and one lunch and one dinner in the Bistro. The food and service was excellent, although in the Bistro the same menu was used for lunch and dinner so there wasn’t perhaps as much choice as in normal times. The gastro food was spectacular, nicely paired with wines.

The grounds are gorgeous, which big open lawns, dotted with seating possibilities, and large bronze sculptures by Paul Day, who made the meeting place in St Pancras’ station. There is a small lake with a tiny island in it. There was also plenty of shade, which give the heat in the high thirties was very welcome.

I got up early in the morning just after sunrise and had the grounds to myself, well, my self and two beautiful herons wadding in the lake.

From the Abbeye there are opportunities for walking or you can borrow bikes with a super canal path about five hundred metres away running through the village.

All in all an oasis of cool calm.

We stayed two nights at the Abbaye with grown up children, as a base for some wine tasting. The hotel buildings are magnificent, sympathetically restored, whilst retaining many original features. Our rooms were spacious, and the welcome cake and liqueur was an innovative touch. A stroll round the grounds before dinner revealed beautiful vistas at every turn.

We ate the brasserie dinner (the fine dining restaurant not being open on Mondays and Tuesdays) and had a thoroughly enjoyable meal, with very attentive service. Breakfast was fine; but we suspect, if it were not for covid restrictions, it would have been more than fine.

As a keen cyclist, my husband was particularly impressed with the high quality Bianchi gravel bikes available for guests to use, and he took advantage to head off down the canal for 20 miles or so. He would have loved to have gone further, if it were not for the pressing desire of the rest of his family to have dinner!

Overall, one of the best short stays we have experienced in France - we will definitely be back for longer next time.

Covid note: The staff are very careful to wear masks and sanitise frequently - we felt very safe.

We have been visiting Abbaye de la Bussière annually on our way to the Côte d’Azur for 10 years. The welcome by Clive, Michael and their team is always extremely warm, welcoming and friendly. Although additional bedrooms have been created over the years, it still retains a peaceful idyllic charm. Guillaume Royer creates delicious, sophisticated, visually pleasing plates of food in the restaurant gastronomique and Freddy, the sommelier, ably and knowledgeably guides you through their extensive wine list which of course contains predominantly vins de Bourgogne. We’re looking forward to the return trip already!

Accompanied by our two dogs we arrived at the Abbaye in the early evening. First impressions were of lovely, old stone, ecclesiastical buildings set in a delightfully sculptured park.
We and our dogs received an equally warm welcome from the charming receptionist. Indeed, throughout our stay all the staff, including the owner and his family, treated us with wamth and friendliness that is sometimes lacking in establishments that consider themselves as catering to the elite.
Our room was luxurious and comfortable and provisioned not only with the usual accessories but also with a delicious cake and a half bottle of peach liqueur.
Our dogs who had been cooped up in the car for mostof the day were allowed to roam freely about the estate and to make friends with the resident Bouvier Bernois.

The restaurant provides a pleasantly mediaeval and relaxing ambience, for the presentation of an enjoyable, delicious and well presented menu. Unquestionably
the cuisine is fully deserving of the Michelin rosette it has been awarded.

The owner, Clive Cummings, who has been brave enough to undertake the refurbishment of a run down episcopal retreat and turn it into a luxury hotel and restaurant deserves the highest praise not only for his work and perseverance but also for the clear motivation given to the staff that lead them to provide just the right blend of unobtrusive friendliness and service .

I hesitate unreservedly to recommend this hotel as part of me would selfishly like to keep it a secret only I and a privileged few are lucky enough to enjoy.

The Abbaye de la Bussiere is the perfect place to relax and unwind!
This was our 4th and longest visit, and we still didn’t want to leave!
We stayed in Echarlis, a spacious beautiful suite a few steps away from the main Abbaye.
The first night we dined on the terrace at the Bistro: delicious menu with fabulous wines selected by Georgia, the talented young sommelier.
Later in the week we dined in the Michelin starred gastronomic restaurant and it was outstanding!
Great wine selected by Freddy, the Head Sommelier.
The dishes were perfectly prepared and faultless.
Special mention for the hot herb infusion served between the fish and meat course: delicious and perfect to cleanse the palate.
The Cummings family and their talented team have created a very special place here, so special thanks to Clive, Tanith, Bethany & Lewis
We will be back… again!

This hotel is truly exceptional. What the Cummings have achieved here is quite remarkable. The scale of the hotel renovation is extraordinary and they say they are not finished yet. The attention to detail inside the hotel and in the grounds, as well as the service is amazing. Our room on the first floor was large, beautiful and very quiet. Out of the window we were able to watch the lawn being mowed three times so that the stripes were perfect. We enjoyed walking round the grounds after breakfast and before dinner. Over our two nights - next time it will be longer - we ate in each of the two restaurants, one large meal and one lighter one the second night to recover from the large one. Congratulations to the Cummings on what you have achieved ; it is something to be very proud of.
As a bonus, after visiting, one can chuckle at the few negative comments on this site and also Clive's quite reasonable but amusing responses.

We stayed for two nights on our way back from Switzerland. It is like stepping back in time as soon as you enter the gates. The abbey is situated in a beautiful park full of enormous old trees. We had a wonderful spacious deluxe room overlooking the park. We enjoyed the quietness of the place very much and say thank you for the very nice attentions as a welcome in our room. The location is wonderful. You are away from it all but in half an hour you are in the middle of the wine route buzz. The work the owners have done regarding restoration of the place is quite sensational. Our compliments. We had dinner twice on the terrace of the bistro as the Michelin star restaurant was closed on the first night and we did not feel having a lavish dinner on the second night. Unfortunately we were not very much impressed with the bistro food. The second night we ate some starters and enjoyed a selection of cheeses and a nice bottle of wine. Breakfast was good.

Stayed in this lovely place for a second time. First time was not able to get to the Michelin starred restaurant as it was closed, and was really looking forward to finally try it.

First about the hotel: the grounds are absolutely lovely, rooms are full of character and comfortable bed and linen. Staff are very attentive and nice.
The whole place is just a charm

Now for the bad things:

For Michelin restaurant it’s just a joke.
I’m not going to describe or share my opinion of the food on the menu. It’s personal experience, but mine was bad. Maybe I’m not a connoisseur enough of coldish seafood with smoked duck breast. But, my wife asked for a mixed green salad from the chef and got THAT!

Table was not cleaned, bread crumps on a table, used bread plate etc.

We had made waitresses aware of it and asked to clean it, she started arguing with us saying that’s normal and she thought we going to have butter with cheese later!

Moreover, leaving the restaurant we were ambushed by the man who started screaming at my wife and myself. I was puzzled as to who is he- apparently he IS an owner! Without going into details he said that he had finished with us! Shame on such owners. It’s a shame as such a lovely place has such an arrogant hosts .

Sommelier in the restaurant was great. Thank you for great wine!

The good

This is a beautiful hotel with a rich history and plenty of greenery around to enjoy.
The food was generally excellent.
The location is good to explore different places in Burgundy.
Some of the hotel’s interior is stunning.

The less good

The hotel is under staffed and the quality of the service varies greatly, despite the presence of the owner’s family which is well meaning and does its best.
The room and its amenities are average at best.
The inside decoration can be greatly improved on. There is what seems to be a temporary exhibition of small pop art sculptures with no artistic value to speak of.

What needs to be improved

There’s something not quite right with this hotel, which probably has to do with the level of service and its lack of sophistication.
No elevator. Getting up and down with heavy suitcases is less than ideal.

It’s the small touches that often resonate strongest. For us, it was Michael cheerfully appearing, almost miraculously, as we arrived and remembering us from last year. Then Domino the cat accompanied us (it was probably the rain…) into the magnificent reception hall and friendly reception.
It’s worth upgrading rooms, we were fortunate to have the spacious and beautifully appointed Fontenay room that has great views over the bucolic parkland, where you should have a refreshment or afternoon tea if possible, as well as the fountain. Similarly, treat yourself to restaurant 1131. Its setting & furniture are magnificent, the sommelier and waitresses are fantastic, while Guillaume personally greets and chats with each table. His dishes are outstanding, so fresh, seasonal and sophisticated. It’s impossible to single out any course, but we can still taste the incredible raspberries in the pudding.

I can’t answer this based on historical fact but given it is s family run hotel and that 3 generations live in site and in the grounds of the hotel I can’t see this as being an issue.. if you are only staying for 1 night I suggest you contact them before your trip to make sure they can accommodate your request in a timely fashion Enjoy your trip Nick Rhodes
