Man died after being crushed by Land Rover

A man died after being crushed by the Land Rover he was working on, an inquest has found.

Russell Powell, 61, was changing a prop shaft on the vehicle on the Wem Industrial Estate near Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

After he failed to return home, on 21 December, Mr Powell’s wife left their home in Wem to search for him and discovered him under the vehicle.

Mr Powell’s death was found to be caused by the 4x4 crushing his lungs and chest, meaning he was no longer able to breathe.

Mr Powell had set off to work on the car at around 16:30 GMT, Shrewsbury Coroner's Court heard.

He had placed the vehicle on a ramp so he could access the prop shaft underneath it.

Mrs Powell arrived at the unit at around 23:35 GMT and found her husband under the car, which was no longer on the ramp.

Emergency services attended and confirmed Mr Powell's death shortly after midnight.

The coroner at Shirehall, John Ellery, recorded a verdict of accidental death.
