Left for dead. Burning for revenge

Eddie Lomax is a drifter who has been in a suicidal funk since the death of his close friend Johnny. Riding his motorcycle into a small desert town where Johnny once lived, Lomax is confronted by a gang of toughs, who beat him and steal his bike. However, Lomax is not a man to take an injustice lying down, and soon he begins exacting a violent revenge on the men who stole his motorcycle, with local handyman Jubal Early lending a hand and several area ladies offering aid and comfort.

among all his action star peers from the halcyon 80s/90s era (stallone, willis, schwarzenegger, seagal), i think van damme was by far the best actor and had the most interesting career, if not the most successful. the late 90s/early 00s was a fallow period for action stars, but van damme specifically chose to make many unorthodox choices, seeking out all the big hong kong directors who left in the handover period like tsui hark and ringo lam and making multiple films with them, not to mention having starred in john woo's first american feature -- these films are odd ducks, a pre-matrix mix of western and eastern stylistics, but you can see that van damme knew what was special in…

This is on Amazon Prime and it is a delight. This is JCVDs 37th most popular film but it is top 10 in my heart.
JCVD is going to a remote town to deliver a present to his friend (Danny Freaking Trejo) when a group of ruffians steals the gift and leave JCVD for dead. They chose....poorly.
JCVD and a delightful supporting cast of elderly people (Pat Morita) and young hotties (Jaime Pressley) help JCVD get rid of two dangerous gangs and reclaim the town. This film is very weird but to me is a perfect role for JCVD because it casts his innocent good boy approach against a series of colorful and crazy characters. I recommend.

This was everything I hoped it would be. Mescaline induced desert visions of coyotes howling at a harvest moon, JCVD on a red Indian Motorcycle racing a coyote in the first five minutes, Mr. Miyagi, Top Gun fighter jets, a threesome, Danny Trejo as a ghost, biker gangs, hillbillies, swords, cellophane wrapped corpses dumped off a cliff for comedy relief, really drunk elderly people and a shitload of roundhouse kicks, all performed in skin tight Levi’s and snakeskin cowboy boots. NOT BAD.

just a few short years after Walter Hill gave us his dusty desert town riff on Yojimbo, Rocky director John G. Avildsen did the same thing only with Jean-Claude Van Damme taking on a bunch of drug dealing bikers and having hotel room threesomes in the process; delightfully esoteric (even by turn of the millennium JCVD standards) with Danny Trejo playing a ghostly Native American character named Johnny Six Toes, Pat Morita as a man in a white suit that’s really good at wrapping up dead bodies in plastic wrap and Dr. Giggles himself, Larry Drake, as one of the villains — when it isn’t concerned with Trejo massaging JCVD’s feet or an old woman watching JCVD bang two women at the same time, it delivers more action than most of his films from this era, with even more slow motion kicks than Hard Target

VAN DAMME-A-THON 2020!!!
JCVD teams up with the director of Rocky and The Karate Kid to make a totally oddball take on Yojimbo, where Van Damme is left for dead in a fly over desert town, and caught between two warring factions. The town is populated mostly by a bunch of weird senior citizens (and Jamie Pressly, randomly) including Pat Morita as a man who always wears fancy white suits, and who gleefully dumps the dead bodies of guys that Van Damme kills. Oh and it has Danny Trejo playing Van Damme’s buddy who nurses him back to health and gives him a foot massage for good measure. I can’t properly express how strange this movie is, but I was won over by it’s weirdness in the end.

Is this Van Damme's Fistful of Dollars or is it his Death Wish 3? I was genuinely happy to be reminded of both. A stranger arrives in a desperate desert town that needs saving from overwhelming corruption. John Avildsen might seem like an unusual choice to direct a JCVD flick, but he brings a sense of professionalism to the casting choices. The colorful supporting characters include skilled comic relief and bad-to-bone heavies; some played by faces we've lost in recent years like Pat Morita, Bill Erwin, Larry Drake and Vincent Schiavelli. Directed by the legendary John G. Avildsen and featuring an eclectic cast of supporting actors, Inferno (AKA Desert Heat) might well be one of Jean-Claude Van Damme's weirdest films thanks to how often bizarre and quirky it is. Among his later-period efforts after the mid-90s when his star power had faded considerably, this is definitely one of the better movies of JCVD's as it is oddly enjoyable thanks to how weird it can be at times, feeling like an unholy mixture of neo-Western action and broad comedy that really shouldn't work but sort of does. I certainly wouldn't say that this is a good movie per se but it's got a decent bit of charm to it as a result…

Jean-Claude "Coyote Man" Van Damme gets his own weird take on YOJIMBO/FISTFUL OF DOLLARS/LAST MAN STANDING that involves him teaming up with a bunch of senior citizens, getting guidance from best bud Danny Trejo (playing a Native American. Yikes) and brutally murdering dozens of biker cowboys. The cast is a murderers row of character actors (Larry Drake! Bill Erwin!), and while the action may be tossed off, it's stuff like Pat Morita playing JCVD's body disposing sidekick that make it special.
At one point Morita randomly says "I bet he pounds a lot of pussy!" and a few scenes later he's proven right as Jean-Claude goes to town on two very naked (and willing) women in a surprisingly graphic sex scene. "Where does he get his energy?" one of them sighs. This was the last film directed by ROCKY and THE KARATE KID's John G. Avildsen

"Right hat, wrong guy!" - Eddie Lomax
This movie is awesome. It's an action movie, it's a western and it's a homage to Kurosawa's amazing classic Yojimbo. They even mention it by name at the end. Pretty cool. Van Damme is on top form in this movie, he looks bad-ass with a cowboy hat and an unshaven face. He has a cool bike and he is friends with Danny Trejo. They go way back. And dare I say it, Van Damme is actually funny in this! The 80s / 90s Summer Action Assault
Van Damme does his version of Yojimbo in a film that references Yojimbo at the end. Beginning to think this chap doesn't play by the rules!
I found this funnier than I did exciting. There's not actually a ton of action in it, it's more like a weird western comedy with an unnecessarily large cast and completely inappropriate casting at that. Danny Trejo as a native American? Eeeek. Vincent Schiavelli as an Indian? Eeeeeek.
It's really weird and fun despite its obvious problems so I'll give it a pass and not just because Jaime Pressley's in it.
